Adding some whimsy and delight to the historic reopening of this national treasure was a privilege. The carousel was first installed at Gwynn Oak Park, just outside Baltimore. The carousel became a landmark of the civil rights movement as protestors and civil rights leadership finally won out, and the park agreed to desegregate on August 28th, 1963. The very same day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech just 45 miles away on the National Mall.
Having the Carousel here on the National Mall is a beautiful way to honor its history and the celebration included several of its first riders from that initial desegregated day. We wanted the reopening to feel dreamy, charming, magical and hopeful. And so we brought bubbles and stilt walkers and our best smiles.
