Last summer Mitote performed together for the first time in Turtle Island ~ an extension of my best friend’s family Nahua music and danza project, born in Anáhuac (“Mexico”). Ilhuicatl carved the huehue and teponaztli himself, and transcribed the drum parts his dad wrote. We shared traditional danzas of Colibrí, Conejo, and Fuego; and I wove in Native Jingle, Hoop, and Grass Dance.
Really proud to share practices from our lineages that tie into so many channels of family, land, and resilience.

After 55 years my dad met his dad after not seeing him since he was 1 year old. It’s been a joyful experience to meet him and all my uncles, aunts and cousins. I know my grandma would be proud of the efforts we did to make it happen. It’s been a wild journey. 🌺
