We must recommit to opposing attacks on our children and attacks on our shared future…..Like the mothers who built movements before they had even the right to vote, we must firmly commit to using our voice and our resources, even as there are efforts to divide and disenfranchise us.”

To find hope, there was no place better to be than at the @texasobserver Mollys Awards last evening. This community of people know the power of the truth and have the courage to tell it — and know the only thing worse than losing a fight is giving up. We celebrated independent media with some of the greats and reflected on the work ahead. Thank you to the @texasobserver for honoring me and the work of @democracyforward with the Rapoport Philanthropy and Service Award - an especially touching honor for a girl from Waco - and for reminding us we must roll up our sleeves. As I shared with this special community last night: “And now the freedom represented through the Voting Rights Act will have to be realized not as a result of the work of those before us– Martin Luther King Jr, John Lewis, Barbara Jordan, Lyndon Johnson, – they aren’t here now. It will have to be realized as a result of the work we must do in our generation to build a better future…. our team at
Democracy Forward…will show up on the bad days, including for the journalists, and for the causes that may seem lost. Because one day, after all the work is done and after you continue to tell all the stories, the tide will turn and the crisis we are in will catalyze true, real change.”
