草原情歌 SOGEN JOKA (1989)
Music by Wang Luobin, Arrangement by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Listen via link in bio🔗
SOGEN JOKA (草原情歌) is a track included on the rare promotional CD TOKIO KUMAGAÏ (1989), produced as a gesture of gratitude from Ryuichi Sakamoto toward the Japanese fashion brand of the same name, founded by designer Tokio Kumagai, for sponsoring Sakamoto’s solo tour by providing costumes. The release featured THE ECHOING BLUE, The Garden, and Sogen Joka.
The title track was later included on the compilation “GEM”, a non-commercial CD with 20 tracks curated by Ryuichi Sakamoto in 2002.
The original melody traces back to 1939, when Beijing musician Wang Luobin (王洛賓) was filming in Qinghai Province near Qinghai Lake. There, he encountered the songs of local ethnic minorities — Kazakh, Tibetan, and Uyghur — and wove their melodies together into a single piece.
The song became one of the most well-known pieces in China, known as “在那遥遠地方” (Zai Na Yaoyuan De Difang). His dedication to transcribing songs sung among the ethnic minority peoples of western China earned him the title “Song King of the West.”
Sakamoto’s arrangement brings the piece into his own musical world, with the erhu at its core. The instrument is performed by Jiang Jian Hua, who also played erhu on the score for The Last Emperor. Sakamoto had already composed that landmark score, and his arrangement of Sogen Joka reflects a continued and genuine interest in Chinese musical tradition.

KAGAMI+, a work that captures Ryuichi Sakamoto’s piano performance in three dimensions and reconstructs it in a mixed reality (MR) space, arrives in Japan for the first time.
The exhibition runs June 27 – October 12, 2026 at VS., a cultural venue in Umekita, Osaka. Tickets are now on sale, and the full programme for the long-awaited Japan premiere has been announced.
KAGAMI was conceived and developed over the final four years of Sakamoto’s life in collaboration with Todd Eckert and the creative studio Tin Drum. Since its world premiere at The Shed in 2023, the work has toured many cities to wide acclaim.
Audiences wear optically transparent headsets and encounter an authentic representation of Sakamoto at the grand piano, surrounded by ethereal visuals that respond to the music — bringing you closer than any conventional concert allows.
The experience extends beyond sound and image. Video, photography, and text are integrated throughout the space, alongside a natural scent personally blended by Sakamoto, creating a multilayered sensory environment.
The Guardian called it “a magical experience.”
An expanded version, KAGAMI+, has been created exclusively for its Japan premiere.
In addition to the main KAGAMI experience, visitors can view related works that offer different perspectives on Sakamoto’s music, including TIME, TIME, a collaboration with Shiro Takatani, as well as Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing the Piano 2026 - D and new sound installations.
Two ticket types are available: RED and BLUE.
RED TICKET holders receive an exclusive 7-inch vinyl, An edition for the KAGAMI+ RED 2026, as a special gift.
A student discount is available for BLUE tickets.
