With little being said about the North of Ireland at such a pivotal point in its history of being constrained by England and its occupation, it felt like there was a disconnect between its past and present among many in England. I headed to Derry for @thefacemagazine to hear from the youth. I can’t thank the cast of the film enough for opening up their stories and have huge respect for them for taking matters into their own hands where they can. Thanking @jennbyrne_ for getting me on board, @adamjakelilley for supporting throughout, @eoinmcl for his sturdy spine, @alfiedanger for another amazing score. Stellar grade from @timotheous and all round legend @millie.gray_ as PA. Online Now.

Some of my favourite sequences from a recent music video I made for Zola Blood. Made over one night in Utrecht with the incredibly talented dancers Justin De Jager and Sem Deliveyne, they opened up their current project ‘Brothers’ to myself and the band, led by a dance style called threading.
It was a pleasure to film dancers again years on having found my own feet filming dance and movement. Capturing moments of improv especially is like nothing else - trying to find your place around the movement where you can spot, trace and react to the conversation playing out between the pair knowing it’s likely not to exist in the same way again.
It built to this moment that became the final scene - we let a slow strobe roll while the lads fell into a 15 minute sequence landing in pockets of their back and forth, that after the fact they said they’d never reached before. The moment of darkness between strobes gave space for the movement to change enough that it could carry on from or completely go against where they’d previously been lit and they really lent into that contrast it opened up.
That was special to watch play out, and speaks to some of the things I’ve been filming over the last year that’s influenced the way I go about directing and capturing certain moments, leaning into or building to moments of improvisation that become the best expression of that moment in time for the character.
Up the Michael Flatley’s in us all.
