Probably one of the finest dubs ever cut, the version to Devon Russell’s take on Curtis Mayfield’s masterpiece “(We People Who Are) Darker Than Blue” produced by Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith on his High Times label; out now on Luke Owen’s’ 333 but with the triumphal “Move On Up” occupying the flip. Signed by Devon on his visit to On the Wire in 1989 along with Roy Cousins and Prince Hammer, what a show!
If ever a guest on the show was worthy of a fanfare it might be now but I’m pretty sure that’s the last thing Steve would want.
I’ll say this though, how many people can you think of that’ve been holding down a weekly radio show since the mid 80’s hosting guests like Lee Perry, Mark E Smith, Adrian Sherwood etc and never showing any sign of watering things down or losing their appetite for new (and old) outsider sounds?… as I said, lots more to say but if you’re curious just do a search for the ‘On The Wire’ archive and put a few years of listening time aside!
