my nani,,, sonia dembla, a prolific artist & writer, passed last week after living a deeply rich & tangled life,,
one of the first recognized female artists in india, her work showed in the indian national gallery, london, amsterdam & san diego throughout the 70s and 80s. working in collage, sculpture, lithography, and painting, her body of work is expansive, and was a reflection of her life - capturing both moments of deep grief and of utter bliss.
she loved to sew, crochet, and adorn. she often used vintage and scrap material in her lifelong practice, sourcing fabrics from different regions of india and transforming them into landscapes in collage.
in the last few years, she branded all of her clothes with a WORLD embroidered tag, i think motivated by her distaste for a world becoming ever less present, more violent, and deeply disconnected from mother earth.
her influence on me is profound & cannot be overstated;
she was radically kind, generous, and resilient [though she had every reason not to be], full of energy & life force … a woman of poise and grace, but also of substance, power, hustle, and grit. she was unwavering & steadfast in her beliefs, deeply honest & funny, fascinating and intellectual,,, ahead of her time,,, a woman all her own. 🌀
