Chicago-based experimental string duo Missing Piece and Chicago-based sound artist Hunter Diamond join New Orleans creative music string players James Singleton, Sixto Franco, and Kyle Anderson to present Thirdstream. Thirdstream defies genre, both classical and jazz and neither classical or jazz, music that explores porous boundaries, exposes limits of traditions and genres, and asks what’s possible in musical conversations.
This performance at Marigny Opera House October 23rd at 7:30 pm highlights a collaboration between Chicago and New Orleans musicians from diverse musical backgrounds as they present New Orleans musician James Singleton’s Hall of Winds, New Orleans musician Sixto Franco’s Tiralineas, and features a large multi-movement work for chamber ensemble "Unsettling" by Chicago sound artist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Hunter Diamond.
Diamond’s new work, Unsettling, features strings, winds, and electronics. Diamond's new work offers sound and comment on Israel from the perspective of an American Jew. He takes inspiration from contemporary Israeli writers who seek to hold Israel to account for its immense transgressions without devaluing its enormous accomplishments. In this work and in Diamond's relationship to the state of Israel, the American Jews and non-Jews of his community, and to the Jewish members of his family, one tactic has continuously proved most helpful in maintaining a sustainable position: holding contradiction.
Thirdstream acknowledges financial support from the Illinois Arts Council @illinoisartscouncil , Brian Sands, the John B Harter Foundation, and in kind support from nienteForte @nf_nola Graphic: Hunter Diamond @_hunter_diamond_
