We feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on this incredible residential extension and renovation project in North Warrandyte, Victoria, in collaboration with amazing clients, builder @j.a.o_constructions and interior designer @danimcnatoli .
Designed for a growing family, the original brief was to extend the existing living area, create a new outdoor entertainment space, a better orientated home office, and a substantial kitchen refresh. All while maximising natural light throughout and being sympathetic to this existing 4-bedroom single storey mud brick home.
Originally built in the 1990’s, the American ranch-style features a long rectangular footprint with large verandahs and eaves. While full of character, the home unfortunately felt dark, cold and disconnected from its surroundings.
In addition to considering the existing footprint and how the clients use the space, we responded to the broader site by deliberately orienting the extension east toward the existing pool, creating opportunities for increased northern light and establishing a strong visual connection to the surrounding Yarra River landscape.

Newport, Melbourne - extension and rework.
A classic weatherboard, reshaped for family living. Brick grounds the addition, while a restrained modern coastal palette keeps the focus on light, flow and connection. With new high ceilings, the plan opens up to create a generous kitchen/living/dining zone, the true centre of the home, while the private wing is refined with a new ensuite and WIR. A garage adds practical storage, and refreshed landscaping ties everything back to site. Less about adding on, more about making the house work harder.

A stunning viewing shelter at Dove Lake, by Cumulus Studio. With a reduced and carefully considered palette of only a handful of materials suited to its harsh conditions and long term performance. Beautifully crafted textured concrete to endure and recede with accents of timber for warmth. It settles spectacularly into the landscape with its form, but adds sophistication with natural light, striking angles and faceted ceilings.

This lounge room needed to work harder for a young family. A small job, when details matter.
We reworked the space to add practical storage for kids’ toys. The result is custom joinery, hidden AV, updated heating/cooling, and all clutter out of sight. Materials consistent with finishes throughout. The fireplace references other internal arches. No hearth, maximising floor space for play. Once styled, the open shelving will give the space added warmth and personalisation.

Yesterday we visited site with the client and builder to see the progress of our North Warrandyte project.
Originally a single-storey mud brick home nestled among the gums by the Yarra River, we carefully respected the existing structure and its strong connection to the bushland setting, while creating a design that responded to the client’s vision.
The next few weeks will see the installation of the glazing and external cladding, a rich material palette of travertine and corten steel.

A personal fav our Director. Shell House - Harry Seidler, Australian modernist. 1988. His only tower in Melbourne, in the corner of Spring and Flinders Streets. Seidler’s design is known for denying the city grid a ‘sharp edge’. The design has so far stood the test of time.
