Today, we are crowning world-renowned pianist Yuja Wang as our #QueenoftheWeek đź‘‘
Wang was born in Beijing, China, to a very musical family. Her father is a percussionist, and her mother is a dancer, so she was exposed to the arts at a young age. She expressed interest in the piano early on, often playing around and pressing the keys of her old family piano as a child. Wang eventually began learning to play the piano when she was six years old. The next year, she began studying at Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music and later entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. By the time she was 21, Wang was already an internationally recognized concert pianist and had signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon.
Since then, Wang has become a leading artist, with numerous critically acclaimed albums and performances. She’s earned multiple awards, including six GRAMMY® nominations and her first GRAMMY® win in 2023 for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for The American Project. The album also won an Opus Klassik award in the concerto category. Just this year, Wang opened the seasons of many major orchestras across the country, including the San Francisco Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Carnegie Hall’s opening gala, where she played and directed Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1.
In addition to her talent, Wang has changed the world of classical music through her personality and stage presence. She uniquely blends impressive technical skill with her modern, glamorous, and energetic performance style. Her high-fashion outfits and vibrant, charismatic energy have attracted more diverse audiences to classical music and connected younger generations to the genre.
Thank you, Queen, for bringing your unique style to the world of classical music and inspiring others to do the same đź’ś #SIXBroadway
Motherhood is a lot of work, but doing it while performing 8 shows a week is Queen behavior đź‘‘
