Meet Jambu Merah by Azzah Sultan(@sitisultan )— a piece that reflects her love of pattern making and the adornment of traditional batik. Inspired by her mother’s fashion style, fruit, materiality, and the unknown, Azzah shares how this piece connects to her broader performance work exploring intergenerational relationships. Out now! 🇲🇾❤️

“Sultan renders these objects in oil paint, bringing the conversation of material culture into the realm of
fine art. As an unmarried woman, the cultural significance of many jewelry pieces and their connection to her heritage are complex. Sultan also notes how in Southeast Asian culture, jewelry has intergenerational importance. Passing jewelry from a mother to a daughter is an act of love and can help to create some financial stability for her.”
this time last year I was designing this hijab for @velascarves and now I get to wear it for Eid and match with these cuties 💚 Selamat Hari Raya bbs 💚

The sewing box is an exploration of memory and the way it transforms over time. This piece looks at my mother’s memories but through my perspective. Although we may grow up with our mothers we never truly know their past and who they were before motherhood. These are conversations that are difficult to have with older generations and I wish to explore it through a memory box. This piece has also lead to my on going pursuit of exploring memory and archiving my past.
