Mabala-Bala Potato Printing Workshop
We started with printmaking using everyday materials amazambane (pronounced amazambayne, inside joke)
just trying to understand marks (mabala)
Slowly it became about seeing, carving, printing, making mistakes, trying again, finding something that works.
By the end, those small marks turned into patterns and then into tote bags everyone could carry.
Thank you to @theartscompanysoweto and @tmgmakerspace for receiving us so warmly.
@katsotlhako for making sure we ate, lunch was delicious
And a special shout out to @lpo_sa for making this space possible
Thank you Mashudu for the photos @norocosangel
Bo ngwana sheba!
Looking for something creative this school holiday?
MABALA BALA is a 5-day potato printing workshop for teenagers (14–18) Limited spots. Apply via the link in bio or scan the QR code.
Through @lpo_sa , I first photographed Grade 12 students for their group portraits, choosing to hand-collage the images onto A3 paper as a way of thinking beyond the printed photograph.
A year later, myself and @punk_tsulaa returned to photograph the entire school. These images were then edited by @kombonation_ and printed on a much larger scale as a public installation
In my final year at @imbalivisualliteracyproject , I facilitated a photo-weaving workshop with like 13 classmates exploring how photography can live through craft.
Most recently, I co-facilitated a workshop with @msbuttonz85 , introducing photo weaving to 30 high school students reaffirming the power of learning through making.
S/O to to LPO, @frypanmfula and @vuyiswavu for the platform, trust, and support that made this work possible from the very beginning.

#35mm #doubleexposurefilm
@tshedzamashamba and I had a little fun testing out the T-shirt. Please note in one of the images, she has the photo at the back, we were just playing around to see what it would look like if the image sat there and she turned her face toward me(for visuals only!)
The actual design has the photo printed in the front.
