The first week of our second campaign at the archaeological park of Siris-Herakleia brought plenty of work – and plenty of rain – but also great progress on many fronts. Here’s what we’ve been up to!

Riportare alla luce il passato è un’avventura affascinante, ma per farlo serve la massima sicurezza nel presente.
Siamo estremamente orgogliosi di aver ricoperto l’incarico di RSPP e Consulenti per la Sicurezza sui luoghi di lavoro durante l’ultima campagna di scavo a Policoro, nell’ambito del prestigioso SIRIS Project. 🏺🇮🇹
Un onore immenso aver lavorato fianco a fianco con gli archeologi e i ricercatori della Humboldt-Universität di Berlino 🇩🇪🤝, unendo le forze in un team multidisciplinare e internazionale.
Gestire la sicurezza in uno scavo archeologico è una sfida ingegneristica complessa: dal rischio di cedimento del terreno alla logistica di cantiere, fino alla gestione delle attrezzature e alla tutela di decine di operatori sul campo. Il nostro obiettivo? Garantire che l’unica cosa a “scavare a fondo” fosse la ricerca scientifica, permettendo al team di lavorare con zero infortuni e in totale serenità. 🛡️🔍

The fourth and final week of our campaign in southern Italy has come to an end – and we look back with gratitude on an intense and successful field season.
🏺 At the Sanctuary of Demeter, we identified and excavated a new Archaic votive deposit containing a bundle of iron spits (obeloi). The assemblage was recovered through block lifting and will now be investigated further by means of microstratigraphic excavation. In addition, we brought to light a substantial wall structure that predates the construction of the so-called Ost-Temenos.
⛏️ At the Collina del Castello, we were able to locate and document the long-sought mudbrick defensive wall, marking a major step forward in our understanding of the site’s fortification system.
🪨 Finally, both trenches were carefully backfilled in order to preserve the exposed archaeological remains.
With many new insights, significant discoveries, and valuable collaborations, our campaign now comes to a close – while the analytical work is only just beginning.

🏺 Presso il Santuario di Demetra abbiamo individuato e scavato un nuovo deposito votivo di età arcaica contenente un insieme di spiedi in ferro (obeloi). L’insieme è stato recuperato tramite asportazione in blocco e sarà ora oggetto di ulteriori indagini mediante scavo microstratigrafico. Inoltre, abbiamo messo in luce una significativa struttura muraria precedente alla costruzione del cosiddetto Ost-Temenos.
⛏️ Sulla Collina del Castello siamo riusciti a individuare e documentare il tanto ricercato muro difensivo in mattoni crudi, segnando un importante progresso nella comprensione del sistema difensivo del sito.
🪨 Infine, entrambi i saggi sono stati accuratamente reinterrati al fine di preservare le evidenze archeologiche messe in luce.
Con numerosi nuovi dati, scoperte significative e preziose collaborazioni, la nostra campagna giunge ora al termine – mentre il lavoro di analisi è appena iniziato.

Eine erfolgreiche Partnerschaft geht in die nächste Runde! 🤝
Wir freuen uns sehr, dass Constanze Graml von der Universität Trier erneut Teil unserer Kampagne war. Bereits im vergangenen Jahr hat sie unser Team mit ihrer Tatkraft und ihrem Fachwissen bereichert – und auch diesmal war die Zusammenarbeit wieder äußerst wertvoll.
Im Rahmen ihres Aufenthalts hat sie zudem im Depot und im Museum Material mit Bezug zur Göttin Artemis-Bendis gesichtet – ein Aspekt, der künftig auch in unser Forschungsprojekt einfließen wird.
Vielen Dank für den intensiven Austausch und die gemeinsame Arbeit vor Ort!

The third week of our campaign at the archaeological park of Siris-Herakleia was a real challenge – we were battling the weather, with rain almost every day. Still, we managed to achieve important progress:
🌧️ Despite the difficult conditions, work continued steadily on all fronts.
🏺 At the Collina del Castello, we made significant discoveries. Current evidence points towards fortification structures of the ancient settlement – but further investigation is needed.
⛏️ At the Sanctuary of Demeter, we expanded our trench. We are now intensifying our work near the votive deposit that we already investigated last year.
📑 We also made great progress in documenting and processing our finds from the previous campaign. Dirk Mariaschk joined our team. We’re looking forward to his support in the next campaign.
🎥 In addition, we had a visit from a TV crew and were happy to show interested visitors around our excavation.

La terza settimana della nostra campagna nel parco archeologico di Siris-Herakleia è stata una vera sfida: abbiamo dovuto fare i conti con il maltempo, con pioggia quasi ogni giorno. Nonostante ciò, siamo riusciti a ottenere importanti risultati:
🌧️ Nonostante le condizioni difficili, il lavoro è proseguito costantemente su tutti i fronti.
🏺 Sulla Collina del Castello abbiamo fatto scoperte significative. Le evidenze attuali suggeriscono la presenza di strutture difensive dell’insediamento antico – ma saranno necessarie ulteriori indagini.
⛏️ Presso il Santuario di Demetra abbiamo ampliato il saggio di scavo. Stiamo ora intensificando il lavoro nell’area del deposito votivo già indagato lo scorso anno.
📑 Abbiamo inoltre fatto ottimi progressi nella documentazione e nello studio dei reperti della campagna precedente. Dirk Mariaschk si è unito al nostro team – siamo felici di poter contare sul suo supporto anche per la prossima campagna.
🎥 Abbiamo anche ricevuto la visita di una troupe televisiva e siamo stati lieti di mostrare lo scavo ai visitatori interessati.

The second week of our campaign at the archaeological park of Siris-Herakleia was marked by exciting progress and close collaboration:
🏺 We opened a second trench on the Collina del Castello – with some very promising discoveries. More on that soon!
🔬 Together with colleagues from Austria, samples from last year’s finds were collected for archaeometric analyses, applying modern methods to deepen our understanding of the material.

⛏️ A key focus was the study of the stratigraphy. In collaboration with specialists, we discussed and refined our interpretations of the excavation results so far.

La seconda settimana della nostra campagna nel parco archeologico di Siris-Herakleia è stata caratterizzata da importanti progressi e da una stretta collaborazione:
🏺 Abbiamo aperto un secondo saggio di scavo sulla Collina del Castello, con scoperte molto promettenti. Maggiori dettagli seguiranno presto!
🔬 Insieme a colleghi provenienti dall’Austria, sono stati raccolti campioni dai ritrovamenti dell’anno scorso per analisi archeometriche, applicando metodi moderni per approfondire la nostra comprensione del materiale.
⛏️ Un’attenzione particolare è stata dedicata allo studio della stratigrafia. In collaborazione con specialisti, abbiamo discusso e approfondito l’interpretazione dei risultati ottenuti finora.
📑 Ci siamo inoltre concentrati sulla documentazione, fondamentale per le prossime fasi della ricerca. Siamo particolarmente entusiasti di proseguire lo studio del Santuario di Demetra.

🔎 Fieldwork continues under perfect weather conditions!
We continued our work and made the most of the good weather to carry out measurements with the Tachymeter. The excavation trench has been surveyed, an essential step for documenting the structures accurately and preparing the next stages of the research.
With the measurements completed, we are excited to continue working on the trench and to see what the coming days will reveal.
