One of the things I love about working with them(beyond them all being amazing and talented folks) is just how many genres we get to explore when doing an album, not only the songwriting but also the instrumentation and production techniques. I call this the mixtape approach to making an album.⠀

Jeans was new ground for us…letting us explore early, fun, punk rock…to me it was as if the Ramones & The Runaways decided to go roller skating in the summer of 77’ but the Heartbreakers came along and spiked everyone’s punch!⠀

Damaged Girls by @agenderband is out…I co-produced this with @romyohh at my studio in the beginning of year, a mere 6 months after the last record we did together, No Nostalgia was released.
Savage track, a post punk slayer and the most extensive production and arrangement we’ve done together. Layers and layers of synths, thundering non-linear drums(now with stereo OH’s), unrelenting bass, slashing guitar and as always Romy’s great vocals and lyrics.

Last winter I started a new music project with my friends Aaron Rose & Julian Gross…it was initially just us getting together every Sunday night to play music and hang out. We started recording the session and became clear that there were some really nice things happening with the music, exploring things that we each hadn’t done before. Aaron playing this haunting air organ, Julian exploring synths and me working with just a processed TR-808 trying my best Jeff Mills <90bpm impersonation. Recorded over 4 hours of these jams that were recently edited into something cohesive and actually pretty listenable. A few weeks ago we played them inside of Aaron’s La Rosa Social Club installation and it was amazing to watch how uplifting it was for people visiting. Love Aaron and Julian and working creatively with them. Aaron and I were introduced by our freind Cali back in 06’ when he was starting a music project(The Sads) and we played many museums and galleries all around the world. Julian was a a member of one of my favourite bands of the 00’(Liars) and their record, They Were Wrong, So We Drowned got me excited about music in the new century. They started calling the project Sun Valley Symphony Orchestra. @sunvalleysymphonyorchestra I was hit by a hit and run driver last week when someone ran thought a yield sign(not my fault!) doing ok but whiplash is real! Julian, who’s become an incredibly art director designed this limited tee shirt to kindly help to(hopefully) repair my car…just had liability as I hadn’t been in a accident since getting sober 19 years ago(hard lesson learned!).

No Nostalgia by Agender is out now. It’s a record I produced and tracked that’s deeply rooted in post punk with its influences, attitude and songwriting. 14 songs that feel as if you’re listening to a good mixtape with a wide range of influence and instrumentation! The last 12 years I’ve been building a studio and leaning recording technique…I’ve felt a little behind my peers with recording as I had always played in bands but quadrupling the effort I learned my process. I am so grateful to Romy(who co-produced it with me) and the band for trusting me with the album! Did the lions share during the pandemic/elections and many of the things Romy wrote about are reflecting the times we’re in. I do hope you take a listen and enjoy it…and thanks to Agender for making me a record producer!
A Puff Before Dying, a film I scored last year just showed at the 21’ SXSW film festival. Directed by Michael Reich & Mike Pinkney in conjunction with LA’s longstanding Bob Baker Marionette Theater who designed new characters for the first time in years just for the film. It’s a horror/comedy that parodies scare tactic PSAs of the 50’ like Red Asphalt but directed gorgeously like a David Lynch film with a bit of Monty Python comic gore. The score I did is pure 80’s Italian horror synth with a little Carpenter piano thrown in for good measure...also worked on a sequence with the vocalist Andrea Wasse who was just magical🦄. When Michale first approached me about working on it his description was “...imagine Suspiria meets with Team America” with that I was in! Hope you enjoy it. Composed some music for this feature on the artist Steve “ESPO” Powers. His Early Bird Gets the Term campaign is to get people engaged to vote in this next election along with community activism by sign making. In an election cycle with voter intimidation & apathy you could actually look at casting your vote as an act of rebellion this year. This was directed by Aaron Rose & edited by Lenny Mesina. I’m greatful to be a part of the project. I’ve got a couple of compositions(...in these video posts) along with Money Mark who has his beautiful track Trust in it as well. Preach by @agenderband is now out! It’s the first single from their new album I recorded and co-produced with @romyohh at my place and the first full length record I’ve produced(the video in the post is just an edit of the tracks different section btw...). During pre-production Romy and I decided we wanted to make a record that felt more like a mixtape of all the post punk we loved. Siouxsie, Wire, ESG, Raincoats, The Voidoids, Slits, Big Black, PIL, Birthday Party, Sonic Youth and other, distill those influences into something new and NOW. For the last 8 years I’ve been learning how to record and produce music and all my friends at DFA Records have been mentors. That means live drums and sequenced synths! I’m very grateful and proud of the work everyone did. When deciding what would be the first song released Preach made perfect sense in a world so rapidly changing and I hope you’ll dance to others when the record is released!
