Happy Black History Month! February is the month my Great Grandfather was born. In the 1960s, he drove from Texas to California after learning that African Americans had the opportunity to buy real estate in San Diego.
A US Navy Master Chief, not knowing if he’d ever be stationed in San Diego, he took the chance on buying the house recognizing the generational impact it would make on our family.
3 generations later, I am raising my own family in this house in Southeast San Diego. Grandpa and I shared a birthday, so if I seem spoiled, there u have it. The patriarch of the family was celebrated heavily and I am grateful to have shared this day with him. He would have been 100 this year!
His art was photography. So all of the things that I was too young to know about when he was here to tell the story, I’ve learned on my own through pictures.
The Black is Beautiful Project and fashion throughout the decades was organized by @calvinsphotographicmemory . This project has given my a deeper appreciation and sense of pride in my community roots.

The vintage ones are family photos from my home taken by Grandpa in the 1950s.
