45 minutes from the entrance is NOT an ideal place for a gas failure.
However Neville (@sinisa ) handled it very well!
We were stage cave diving a popular site in the #Tulum area. At this point our average depth was only 12m or so. We dropped the stage tanks when they reached their drop pressure at about minute 40. Then 5 minutes, 1 T and 1 Jump later there was a POP
Tons of bubbles coming from Neville’s 90 degree elbow off his left tank. Neville followed his training well and quickly identified the affected tank, shut it down, then asked his teammate (me) for help. A quick diagnosis told me his actual elbow had come apart. Not the connection from elbow to hose, or from elbow to second stage. The elbow ITSELF.
It is not often that I get to see a “new” type of failure. So I admit my very first thought was “COOL” 🤣 (Neville was in a very comfortable place).
I deemed this a problem not worth taking the time to fix. Especially now that our depth was about 23m, and we were only 5 minutes from our stage, so we just turned around. And casually exited the cave.
We changed the team positioning so Neville was in front of me and off we went. No further dramas. 50 minutes later we were safely on the surface.
It can happen to ANYONE at ANYTIME. Be prepared. Practice your skills.
