SINGHS IN THE RING REVIEW! 🎬 Last night, I was privileged to attend the @singhsinthering premiere here in Vancouver! Director Akash Herman and composer @gagansinghmusic were in the house, along with the star of the documentary @gr8gamasingh and featured stars @truerajsingh and @rajthemaharaja . It’ll be out on @cravecanada on Oct 20th. I went into the documentary with no real expectations. There has been a plethora of wrestling docs in the past 25 years. A lot of them somewhat redundant for wrestling fans. As a bit of a historian in this space - there aren’t a lot of stories left untold. I have met the Great Gama Singh a few times. I knew him as a pioneer for Sikh Punjabis in pro wrestling even though billed from Pakistan sometimes. I started doing my own research when one of the Raj’s would tell me about him and when he appeared in TNA. I have heard his promos and seen him wrestle but never really knew his story. I never heard about his struggles or his impact from others. This doc did a really fantastic job on telling that story. There were many familiar faces to help tell this story too. Bret Hart, Lance Storm, Jinder Mahal, Chelsea Green and many more. We also hear a ton from his family and his son, Raj Singh. There was a lot I found relatable as a first generation Indo-Canadian whose parents and grandparents immigrated to this country. If your parents or grandparents immigrated to North America you’ll find yourself thinking about them. However if you’re a wrestling fan intrigued by history, you’ll hear a lot about Canadas most famous territory - Stampede Wrestling. Whether you’re a wrestling fan, a product of an immigrant family or not, you’ll enjoy it. It’s not just for wrestling fans, it’s a story for everyone. It exceeded my expectations. It’s a real life chronicle about chasing a dream. A story about sacrifice, family, discrimination, assimilation, triumphs, tragedies and navigating the wrestling business. I walked away thinking of Gama Singh as a hero for all the little Indian and Middle Eastern kids who dream to wrestle. A trailblazer who made it against all odds but heartwarming reminder that family always comes first! 👏🏽🖤
