1v1 Experimental judge:
SIMZIEZ | Simran Sachar
Simran shines brightly and captivates the room. Her intentionality in every movement brings a network of stories to life. It invites people to wonder, to introspect, to grow…
As a street dance & contemporary artist, choreographer and actor with years of experience under her belt, she has inspired many individuals (including us) in dance and beyond. We are so honored and excited to have Simran on this seat.
•
Being ‘experimental’ is not simply a ‘vibe’.. it is an invitation to explore, to listen and give space for vulnerability as we create.. as we freestyle
it is for every artist. Let’s learn and share space together!
🎟️ tickets live in bio! (participants tickets close 5 June 2359. door tickets for spectators available)

#HappyInternationalDanceDay
In celebration and gratitude for today (and everyday), we’re thankful that we’re able to do what we love, and share our passion with one another and our community. Dance is what brought us together and will continuously bring people together until the end of time.

Shout out to @ladiesfirstyvr for giving us the opportunity to share the dance floor with @born2boogie_crew in an exhibition battle

Sharing my process, my perspective, my heart twice in one day for different celebrations of International Dance Day. I recognize I am here and making because of all the people who believed in me, the visionaries who came before me, and the OGs who lived through the emergence of my favourite dances. It is because of this foundation that I get to do this work and reveal it.
Sharing 1: A part of the Choreography Walk starting at @thedancecentrebc , conceived by @justine.a.chambers in collaboration with @alanagerecke . I’ve been wondering about the flick of a wrist, a side eye, and the undulation that never quite completes where it’s supposed to. There’s a dark underbelly in this city and it got me reflecting on what it means to live a feminist life.
Sharing 2: Part of Studio Salon series by @co.erasga@alvinerasgat ⭐️ inside of What Lab I’ve been in a state of passing through, feeling like a friend of a friend, sucked into a corner, and soaking in a navy blue grief bath where up is down and down is up. I’ve been watching my habits and my go-to crowd pleaser moments slip away. Thank you to my fave @lisagel for being in the studio with me 🫒
Here are some words by @nakinisowin Lao Tzu and feministkilljoyatwork that have touched me this April while I was in creation. Everyday felt different.
Thank you to @justine.a.chambers@alanagerecke@thedancecentrebc@co.erasga and @alvinerasgat ⭐️
🌟𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 has been re-launched @surreyartgal #UrbanScreen
👀On view until April 7th
🤝Commissioned by FORM in partnership with Surrey Art Gallery as part of their Kinesthesia fall exhibition series
🫂Created by longtime artistic collaborators of FORM, new media artist @whichnancy and choreographer, dancer, and actor @simziez 💙
📑In 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠, “there is an intentionally gendered element to Sachar and Lee’s piece that emphasizes the erasure of women’s contributions in the workplace; [characters in the project] Lauren and Nova hold what are often thought to be female-oriented roles. Just as society has minimized the unseen labour that women have been expected to do as caretakers and housekeepers, it is as if Lauren and Nova are implying that women’s contributions in the workplace can just as easily be ignored.”

These hands are still at work has been re-launched on the Surrey City Centre Library. Running now until April 7th ‼️
—
These hands are still at work is a collaborative, large-scale video work by media artist Nancy Lee and choreographer, dancer, and actor Simran Sachar. Nancy’s current research interests include surveillance, tech ethics, and platformization of society. Simran’s current research interests include distortion, disappearance, return, and reintegration into community. In their project, migration manifests as an ancient, genetic, rhythmic response for survival. For the artists, migration is movement, movement is change, and change is the only constant. In These hands are still at work, the rhythm of movement becomes the rhythm of labour. The mundane labour of someone else’s life forms the foundation of our leisure. Nancy and Simran introduce to you Lauren and Nova, two AI assistants who are changing the patterns of migration. This project is an original commission by FORM (Festival of Recorded Movement) in partnership with Surrey Art Gallery, as part of the Kinesthesia fall exhibition series.

Anup ❤️ I will miss you forever. Being a little sister is the best, because I get to have so many chosen big sisters through Nikita 👯♀️ you’ve influenced so much of who I am, you are in every memory, birthday party, Christmas, thanksgiving, lazy summer days. You are the brightest light in the world, you are infinitely gorgeous, you’re a well of kindness, you have so much range, and finally you are the most hilarious person I’ll ever know. You are so hilarious, that even now when you’re gone and we tell stories about you the crying turns into laughter, the kind of laughing that hurts your stomach and gives you abs. When I looked back on our memories I couldn’t stop laughing. Everything with Anup ended with a laugh 💕 you say “you are the sun,” when the sun is out, we’ll know you’re not far. She just has that sparkle that only comes around once in a lifetime. Our Hailey’s comet ☄️⭐️❤️
How many hats do you wear? How often does it feel overwhelming?
⚡ Working as a Multi-Hyphenate Artist
As many independent dance artists know all too well, sustaining a career often means working multiple roles: performer, choreographer, teacher, collaborator, and more.
In this professional development session, @simziez will drop some gems and lead a conversation on how to navigate contracts, gig offers, fee structures, and sustaining a creative practice across different spaces. We are excited to hear your own experiences and questions. Bring something to write on if you'd like to take notes. 💎
Part of 𝙋𝙍𝙊 𝙋𝙍𝘼𝘾𝙏𝙄𝘾𝙀, a free gathering for independent dance artists hosted by @cada_west . Don't miss the other amazing workshops.

Over the next year I am stepping into the research and creation phase of my new work, Twister. I will be working bi-coastally in so-called Vancouver and Montreal with 6 dance artists who specialize and/or have a history with W*acking, and a sound consultant/DJ.
At the end of my “Vancouver” residency, I want to welcome everyone who loves to dance into an open styles, freestyle session. This offering is for our community to interact with what’s already been activated in the residency by our team. Please come share space, show off or keep lowkey, socialize, cypher and get down with us to close out a week of hard work ⭐️💓
We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, British Columbia Arts Council, and New Works. Special thank you to New Works for supporting this initiative and providing space. #bringingtheartstolife
