Fairy Pitta 🧚♂️
The 3rd pitta species photographed here in Singapore. Similar to the others, this one was very willing to put on a show, hopping back and forth alongside the boardwalk to ensure all visitors got a good view from different angles.
Singapore is outside of the usual geographical range for fairy pittas, making this encounter even more special.
If you’re visiting Singapore Botanic Gardens, do visit the rainforest trail to see this guy up close before he leaves SG.

Common Kingfisher
Following up from my post yesterday, here’s some closeups of a beautiful common kingfisher, found at my favourite park in Singapore. Always photogenic and full of action, common kingfishers are a photographer’s dream.
They are winter migrants to Singapore and can be found islandwide between September to March each year, with individuals often returning to the same hangout spots.
Swipe to see it landing back on a branch and bashing its catch before consuming it.

Common Kingfisher
The first photo I took in 2026. What a special moment, birding in Chiang Rai on New Year’s Day. The calm of the morning broken by the high pitched call of the common kingfisher, followed by a flash of blue just above the water’s surface, dashing through the thick fog.
A truly special bird bringing with it the perfect start to the new year.

Yellow-vented Bulbul
One of the first birds you’ll start noticing when your bird watching progresses beyond mynahs, crows, pigeons and sparrows. The yellow-vented bulbul is one of Singapore’s most abundant garden birds, found in parks, gardens and open spaces across the island. Recognisable by its pale underparts, subtle face pattern and most importantly, bright yellow underpants (vent).
If you come across a small, neat, cup shaped nest made of fine twigs, hidden in shrub or ornamental plants by the roadside, it probably belongs to one of these.

Red-whiskered Bulbul
Another day, another bulbul.
The red-whiskered bulbul is instantly recognisable by its upright crest, white cheek patch, and bright red vent. Native to South and Southeast Asia, it has also been widely introduced beyond its natural range due to the cage bird trade. It feeds mainly on fruits and insects and adapts well to gardens and urban edges, including here in the densely populated Singapore.

Streak-eared Bulbul
Another member of the bulbul family we saw in Thailand, the streak-eared bulbul is a common resident across mainland Southeast Asia.
Recognised by the fine streaking near its ear coverts and warm brown tones, it thrives in gardens, farmland, and forest edges. Like many bulbuls, it feeds on fruits and insects, playing a role in seed dispersal.
This was one of the few birds that kept posing in front of our tent, where we were camping at the foot of Doi Inthanon. Super convenient for birding.

Sooty-headed Bulbul
Photographed in Chiang Rai, the sooty-headed bulbul is a highly adaptable Southeast Asian songbird, recognised by its black crest and bright red vent. It feeds on fruits and insects, playing an important role in seed dispersal.
In Singapore, it is an introduced resident likely escaped from the pet trade. Although established here, it is not always easy to spot as it often keeps to treetops and dense foliage. Keep an eye (and ear) out, you might hear them before you see them.

Red-breasted Parakeet
At Bidadari Park, this red-breasted parakeet sits tucked inside a tree cavity, likely incubating eggs.
Though considered invasive in Singapore, they’ve firmly woven themselves into our urban soundscape.
Next time you’re out for a morning walk, look a little closer - you might just spot a tiny head peeking back at you.

Lesser Whistling Ducks
Did you know that apart from the wild chickens you see daily, wild ducks also inhabit our city-state?
This duck family has made a flooded field in our CBD their home, occupying one of Singapore's most expensive land parcels.
While it’s great to see wildlife thriving amidst urbanization, it’s bittersweet knowing their haven will be lost to development someday.
Let's keep spreading awareness and appreciating these spaces before they vanish.

Spotted Owlet
Another memorable bird I spotted overseas, this time in the heart of Bangkok, at a park next to the famous Chatuchak Market.
This adorable little guy was perched low on a small tree beside the sidewalk, partially concealed by leaves, as people walked by without noticing it.
Thankful to the other birders that pointed me in the correct direction to find these owlets. Also spotted an owlet couple, which I will share photos of in a future post.

Spotted Wood Kingfisher
Contrary to its name, this Kingfisher doesn't feed on fish. Instead, it inhabits lowland forests and feeds on insects, snails, and other vertebrates. Check the last slide for a glimpse of it in action.
Delighted to have seen a Philippine endemic in just half a day of birding.

Brahminy Kite Family
Last set of photos highlighting the family's daily interactions. Mother lands in the nest with a fresh catch, and father feeds himself as the kids look on.
Interestingly, I've noticed that the parents always consume the fish head before sharing the rest with their chicks. Is this a safety measure or a dietary preference?
