What happens when the performer on the other side cannot be fully trusted, because it is a machine? With Robot Arm Études, Dutch interdisciplinary artist Daniel Simu and his team present a compelling new performance at the intersection of contemporary circus, performance art, and technology. Created together with Joyce den Hertog and Wouter Lucifer, the work explores tension, control, and collaboration between human and machine. Daniel Simu has spent more than 15 years performing around the world as a juggler and clown. With a background in Circus Arts and Media Technology, his practice brings together live performance and technical experimentation in a highly original way. In 2022, his fascination with technology led him to build the first Acrobot prototype. After two successful shows, it literally fell apart, but that only pushed him further. Since then, he has taught himself skills such as 3D printing, electronics, and precision mechanics, growing into a self-taught roboticist. Robot Arm Études is a powerful example of what can emerge when artistic curiosity meets technical invention.

It's been about 10 days since I started performing the Acrobot from @simu.circus at @krystallpalast in Leipzig. It's been an absolute blast and I am looking forwards for the 3 next months. For 2 years, my bedroom has also been my workshop and my office. Whether I worked alone or with collaborators, it was a bit of a tight space. Here you see me with Mink, transforming my table into a factory for the workshop robots at @digital_playground_rotterdam But now I'm moving out! I'm renting a new Playground together with @anoukwipprecht and @designpartyprogram . And it is huge! I'll share some pictures soon :)

Best flyer ever? Since you all liked the previous Acrobot video so much, here is another sequence. We had a lot of fun coming up with new tricks for the robot to try. I'm very excited that @samchaton will be playing in @krystallpalast for the next 4 months with the Acrobot! We worked hard not just on the act, but also on new gags and bits and even a trio acrobatic number, all involving the Acrobot. Whilst they are in the theatre, I @simu.circus can finally free up some time to develop new work to satisfy my artistic desires. Thanks a lot to the @krystallpalast for their trust and support, @contemporaryweirdo and @samaki_miki for their creative insights and @rudirenneragentur for making it happen. The Acrobot is co-produced by @v2_unstable and @circusstad
