Spring barley trials = sown ✅️
As you'll know, it hardly stopped raining across the UK for much of January and February. So you may be wondering whether that has had an impact on the drilling of spring barley and also the health of winter crops sown last September and October 🌧️
Well, wonder no more. The good news is that our spring barley variety trials site at Beal Farm in Northumberland was sown late last month and, in our first crop update of 2026, Agrochemical & Technical Director David Cairns and Southern Supply Chain Manager Rob Austin discuss crop progress throughout northern England, Scotland and East Anglia 🚜

Micromalting doesn't just inform malting performance and programmes - it also greatly influences the barley varieties grown by farmers across the UK each season 🌾
We play a significant part in this process as we have a number of malting barley trials sites across the trading area of our agricultural merchanting division, @msp_agriculture 📍
At these sites, we assess many different barley varieties each year and micromalting them in the central laboratory at our Tweed Valley Maltings in Berwick-upon-Tweed helps us to build a clearer picture of how each variety is likely to perform at commercial scale 🔬
The data generated from this process goes well beyond the intake analysis typically used when assessing grain. While things like nitrogen levels, specific weight, screenings, moisture and germination are still important, micromalting looks beyond this and shows how those characteristics actually translate into malting performance 🥃
