Have you seen Swan Studio? Follow the link in our stories to learn more about our recent additions to a beautiful 1949 Sarah P. Harkness home at Moon Hill, Lexington.
Harkness was a pioneer of New England modernism. In 1938—the same year Walter Gropius built his famous home in Lincoln—Harkness completed a quietly modern summer house for her parents south of Boston, in Duxbury. Her partner on that project was Eleanor Raymond, a visionary architect whose earlier residential projects Belmont, Dover, and Weston were marked by a radical blend of European modernist ideals and New England vernacular elements. By the time Gropius arrived in the area, Raymond and Harkness, along with their peers Henry B. Hoover, Samuel Glaser, Ned Goodell, and others, had broken ground on a new approach that continues to inspire us today.
