Wireless headphones have turned shared spaces into private bubbles. What was once a collective acoustic experience has fragmented into millions of isolated soundscapes – curated, controlled, and closed off. AI-driven recommendation systems and always-on audio are accelerating that isolation further.
But what happens when that seamless flow gets interrupted? And what does it mean to reclaim the public auditory realm?
In this masterclass, Simon Weckert merges sociopolitical discourse with radical practice. Starting with an Artist Talk on the hidden frequencies of Bluetooth, surveillance, and AI-driven isolation, participants then build their own Bluetooth jammer using a provided Starter Kit – hands-on soldering included. You leave with a tangible tool. And a question you won't stop thinking about.
Simon Weckert doesn't just critique technology – he builds tools to interrupt it. As a digital artist and self-described "modern-day digital wizard", he works at the intersection of code, circuits, and cheeky social commentary. His work has been shown at the V&A Dundee, Ars Electronica Linz, Vitra Design Museum, and Bauhaus Museum Weimar – among others.

“The Republic of Null Island” hace referencia a una isla imaginaria donde se reúne una gran cantidad de información inconexa. Cuando por error u omisión no se puede asignar una coordenada real, las bases de datos asignan la ubicación “0,0”, geolocalizando numerosos archivos en algún lugar del Golfo de Guinea. La representación digital de ese lugar no muestra lo que allí sucede, sino las condiciones de producción y las limitaciones de los sistemas de navegación por satélite que utilizamos a diario.

“The Republic of Null Island” is an imaginary island where a vast amount of random information is accumulating. When, due to error or omission, actual coordinates cannot be assigned, databases assign the location ‘0,0’, geolocating numerous files somewhere in the Gulf of Guinea. The digital representation of that place doesn’t show what actually happens there, but reflects the production conditions and limitations of the satnav systems we use every day.

This project features a simple street graffiti: a blue circle painted on the street surrounded by the white letters N, U, W, Y arranged in a
circle. When someone steps into the center of the blue circle and checks their position on Google Maps, they notice that the blue dot marking
their location matches the blue circle of the graffiti. In this moment,
the circle becomes the missing letter “O”, forming the phrase YOU NOW.
