🪰 またね Japan. Moments from the last 10 days:
01. Jittoku, Kyoto. Opened in 1973 in a renovated traditional sake storehouse, it’s considered Japan’s oldest live music venue. In 1976 the Kyoto-formed band Les Rallizes Dénudés took part in the 3rd annual Sunset Carnival in Ishikawa prefecture on August 3 and 4, stopping in their home town on the way to the festival to play two nights at Jittoku days before. Their set from July 30 was subsequently mixed by former member Makoto Kubota for release last year.
02. Ura Mado, Shinjuku Golden Gai, Tokyo. Named after singer Maki Asakawa’s 1973 album ‘Uramado’ (Back Window), her portrait is fixed to the door. Temporarily closed due to it’s owner Fukuoka-san suffering from a serious illness, there is a fund-raising effort to support his recovery: /. Of Fukuoka-san Keiji Haino says on the donation page’s message board “We often talk about Ayler and Coltrane, and then we’ll talk about Furtwängler and Karajan. I think that will take decades.”
03. Fushitsusha (Haino Soukyoku), ShowBoat, Tokyo 03.05.26. Keiji Haino and band performing on his birthday.
04. Mushizuka 虫塚 (Insect Mound), Kan’ei-ji Temple, Tokyo. A memorial to dead insects erected by aristocrat Sessai Matsuyama in 1821. Its purpose was to console the spirits of the flies, crickets, and grasshoppers that had been killed in the production of a scientific text - an anatomical study of insects that Matsuyama himself had commissioned.
05/06. Kyo no Yado Ishihara, Kyoto. A family-run ryokan where Akira Kurosawa stayed for several weeks whilst filming ‘Kagemusha’ (1980). The inn’s “Kurosawa Room”, where he worked on scripts and storyboards, showcases items left by the director including a pair of slippers he signed.

We Are All In Danger: a Pier Paolo Pasolini mix for @another_man , marking 50 years today since the death of Italian poet, novelist and filmmaker, Pier Paolo Pasolini on Nov 2nd 1975.
The mix features music and atmospheric conditions from his films, lyrics and poetry written by him, as well as music and sound works inspired by his life and body of work. It opens with music from ‘Accattone’, his first film as Director, and closes with a sequence of tracks that reflect on his untimely death, underpinned by Bolesław Wawrzyn’s recordings of the waves at Ostia and Terence Hannum’s processing of applause at Pasolini’s funeral.
The mix accompanies @conordonlon ’s delve into Pier Paolo Pasolini’s personal archives in Florence and Bologna for Another Man’s Winter/Spring 2026 issue and @donlonbooks display of books and material by and about Pasolini in their window until 12/11/25.

🌌 Burning the day w/ Lutz Bacher, yesterday afternoon in Oslo, falling for moments across five decades of uncompromising work. The exhibition title is that of an unfinished book by Lutz, which now exists as a binder in her archive The Betty Center. A chronological compilation of the artist’s work from 2013 until nearly the day she died in 2019, the book’s title cites the expression used by soldiers during the Vietnam War to describe time spent off duty but still deployed: “burning the days.”

🪰💿 Announcing ‘heavy night waits on the dawn’, a limited CD release of recordings I made earlier this year, a 9 track demo of a moment. The physical release is kindly supported by @ccsteding as the latest instalment in their Artist Series and comes in a beautiful hand-stamped aluminium case of their design.
Love and special thanks to Nic and Ben for the invitation and support, and to Scott Young for the musical exchange and collaboration.
The ongoing Artist Series gives carte blanche to an artist to make new work in a form of their choosing. Aiming to generate an unexpected body of works and a wider context for CC-Steding’s own practice, the series exists outside of commercial interests, and particularly focuses on community and offline interaction.
To launch this instalment we’ve collaborated on a limited edition of 100 CDs. Some copies will be available without charge, in person by request at @donlonbooks and @twos.care in London and @1909.bookstore in Paris, from this coming Friday, August 8th. Each CD comes with a personal download code.
