From my series "Permanently Overcast" · Pál Csenki, Szegvár, 2022 Pál, 90, worked on building the walkway in his yard over the course of many weeks during the summer, due to the lack of skilled laborers in the area. He taught himself how to make and pour his own concrete. His children still live here, but his grandchildren moved to the capital of the county, Kecskemét. · Permanently Overcast Life changes can have an impact on our personal growth and who we will become. They define the course of our future and determine our fate. I have been photographing the Great Hungarian Plain for over ten years now. Lately, my renewed focus has been the portrayal of the most pivotal moments these communities and their residents experience. Up close and personal, I witnessed the signs of impermanence, the ageing and migration of the population, and most recently, the direct effects resulting from the current crises, exacerbated by severe drought. For these communities it is especially challenging to predict the future. According to the latest studies conducted in the region, as much as one-tenth of the total Hungarian population will likely disappear in the coming decades, while close to four-fifths will reside in towns and cities. But the people of the Great Plain are incredibly resilient: their strength has always been founded in their strong sense of identity and belonging. Countryside communities know this fact: regardless who holds the power, the center of their world is the place where they conduct their daily lives. Their powerful sense of belonging is what retains them. Having spent many of my summer holidays in the Great Plain provided me with a unique perspective and inspired me to seek the answers to an essential - as well as personal - question: what will become of these communities in the wake of these life-altering changes, and how will their future outlook be affected? #PermanentlyOvercast #capagrandprize #capagrandprize2022 #capacenter #arnyeksav #longterm #longtermproject #documentaryphotography #documentary⁣ #pentax645z #mediumformat

From my new series "Permanently Overcast", which won the Robert Capa Photography Grand Prize Hungary 2022. · József Bozó, Tömörkény, 2022 József Bozó, 72, lives alone in a small, converted Volvo van on his eight-acre land in Tömörkény. He sold all his belongings several years ago, planning to use the funds to erect a village resembling the ancient era of the Hungarian Conquest, but his idea was not realized. · Permanently Overcast Life changes can have an impact on our personal growth and who we will become. My project 'Front line' featured on @telexponthu Thanks to @szabolcsbarakonyi ! · #linkinbio · At the beginning of 2020 the world was confronted with one of the biggest challenges of our modern day history. The COVID-19 pandemic redefined daily life for the entire country, including in the Uzsoki Street Hospital. The true heroes of the year were doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers who battled the epidemic, risking their lives every day on the frontline under extremely demanding circumstances. The Uzsoki Hospital in Budapest has been functioning as the pandemic treatment center since the beginning of COVID-19 infections. The fight against the coronavirus at the Uzsoki Hospital eerily resembles the life-saving measures rendered on the battlefield: treating desperate patients in a life-threatening environment, fighting an invisible and deadly enemy, enduring extreme mental and physical fatigue, witnessing a high number of deaths. The number of deaths in Hungary has reached more than 46,000 since the beginning of the outbreak in 2020. This number is extremely high. · #frontline #telex #photoessay #documentaryphotography #coronavirus #covid_19 #pandemic #pentax645

A photo from my "Second life" series is featured in the current issue of National Geographic Hungary magazine. · Thirty-year-old Richard Meszaros was diagnosed with the coronavirus during the surge of its third wave in the capital city of Hungary, Budapest. Richie spent 59 days in intensive care of Uzsoki Street Hospital where he was connected to a ventilator for nearly the entire time followed by his transfer to the COVID-19 Internal Medicine Unit for a total of 113 days. He received a hero’s sendoff from the hospital after the entire staff became united behind him in their life-saving efforts. Richie was healthy without any pre-existing medical conditions nevertheless his chance of survival remained questionable for a very long time. His kidneys failed several times, and the coronavirus damaged nearly all of his organs. He was eventually discharged from hospital in July after four months, having defeated the coronavirus. ⁣· #SecondLife #richie #natgeohungary #coronavirus #covid19 #uzsokihospital #longtermproject #documentaryphotography #photojournalism #documentary⁣ #645

My project “Ypsilons” featured on viszont.hu online magazine. Thanks to @istvanbielik ! ⁣· #linkinbio ⁣⁣· Ferenc Pintér community representative and László Kovács decorating the Christmas tree of the house in the entrance hall of the “green” building under No.11. Tapolca, 2019 ⁣ The “Y-Houses” represent not only an architectural characteristic of Tapolca, but also a powerful example of Hungarian rural communities. The buildings, often being both praised and criticised, provided a new impulse to the city of Tapolca in the 1970s. Between 1972 and 1986 nine uniquely designed miners’ houses were erected in the outskirts of the city. One building gives space to a number of people that could easily live in a micro-village. The whole complex houses a population that could make up a village of quite a noticeable size. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ The construction of the Y-Houses was an attempt to provide better conditions for the residents. The buildings represented a quality superior to that of the estates consisting of panel houses. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣· #tapolca #yhouses #ypsilons #ipszilonok #hungary #easterneurope #longtermproject #documentaryphotography #everydayhungary #everydayeasterneurope⁣ #645

From my long-term project "The New Norm" · Patient admittance during the third wave at the Covid emergency department of the Uzsoki Street Hospital in Budapest. Only few months ago, experts gave cautious answers when asked about the possibility of a fourth wave in the coronavirus pandemic. By now, a resurgence of SARS-CoV-2 cases is the baseline scenario for most of them. · Within a few months only, the coronavirus named “SARS-COV-2” has pushed the whole World into such a crisis, that humanity hasn’t perhaps seen since World War II. Our lives practically changed from one moment to the other. A new order stepped in, along with many new terms. Social distancing, curfew, lockdown of cities, travel ban, closed borders, rapid tests, the use of a mask and the regular disinfecting, all became the tools against an invisible enemy. Since last year, I have been following and documenting the impact of COVID-19 in Hungary to create a personal photo essay of Hungarian society during a time of the pandemic. #thenewnorm #uzsokihospital #SBO #photoessay #longtermproject #documentaryphotography #contemporaryphotography #photojournalism #documentary #coronavirus #covid_19 #pandemic #pictorialcollective #645 #pentax645
