Japan last month with 4 x Formula One champion, Max Verstappen. Alongside colleague Kiff McManus for Red Bull. • A mixture of mics planted into the car bodies, track atmos, personal lavs and the brilliant Reidel specialist from Red Bull giving me a direct audio feed from the Artist mainframe on an RJ45 to Lemo 3 lead, so we could record all the comms to and from the Driver and between all of the telemetry experts, in the highest possible quality without any RF carrier noise. It was the first time I’d actually seen this workflow and didn’t know it was actually possible. It made such a difference to the quality of what we were able to record and apparently how they derive the comms traffic on the Netflix show ‘Drive to Survive’ Every day is a school day!! 😀 @redbullracing @redbulljapan @maxverstappen1 @redbullmotorsports #soundrecording #soundrecordist #productionsoundmixer #maxverstappen1

One for my sound community! Been using the @radiuswindshields mini-alto kit for a while now and I’m really impressed! Magnetic basket attachments, silent suspensions with multiple hoop options for different mics, low weight, robust construction. What’s not to like?!?💚 Check them out!! • #soundrecordist #soundrecording #productionsoundmixer #locationsound #minialto

Women’s Super League for Sky Sports. Player of the Match is 19yrs old I have T-shirts older than her 😀 which is both sobering and utterly brilliant! (Actually, my oldest t-shirt is 40, from my first ever gig😳) 7-0 to Arsenal. Great night at work. Love Vivid’s new ‘Barra’ scanner. More like a music mobile with a dedicated production hub/chill out area next to sound booth. Bringing client satisfaction to the forefront of commercial delivery. •

Premier League West Ham v Everton from the 2012 Olympic Stadium. Good to catch up with so many talented colleagues behind the camera today and a smooth ride home in blazing sun. It’s good to remember how much fun this job is 🙌💚🙏 •

I never want to understand why I love watching movement expressed like this. I just know it feels good. ‘Alchemies’ by @studiowaynemcgregor Three short ballets. Catch it if you’re in town. • It’s relevant to my work, in that I recognise I’ve ruined too many artistic passions by intellectually dismantling them. I work with sound which has made my hearing tired - so, I rarely listen to music and I haven’t had a set of speakers in my house for nearly thirty years. When trying to watch a film for fun, I can’t stand the way my brain starts to dissect the myriad components of an audio mix or recognises every lens choice…. I just KNOW that my awe will disappear if I learn anything about what these dancers are doing. I want to retain that ignorance and innocence. Keeps the magic alive…..

FORMULA 1: A day filming with Alpine and their principal driver Franco Colapinto. • Love it or hate it - it’s bloody impressive to watch an F1 team in action. A battalion of extremely talented people working under pressure. I genuinely had the most fascinating ten minute chat with a technician about tyre pressure differentials changing with altitude and temperature. He was so excited about it - I got excited too !! 😃 • The most impressive aspect of it all is the comms. The noise is utterly overwhelming in the pits, yet everyone can communicate point to point in high fidelity thanks to Reidel Bolero and 1200 series SmartPanels. They have a wonderfully calm and highly professional audio team running that system. • #soundrecordist #f1sound #locationsound #productionsoundmixer #locationsound

Four thousand kids paying fantastical amounts of money to watch two kids playing computer games on a stage. Accompanied by a full symphony orchestra. Presenters dressed as pirates. MASSIVE TV production. No, I don’t understand either, but delighted to send them an invoice for my services. LOVE the Royal Albert Hall. Saw my Dad play here a few times. Special memories every time I walk around backstage. • #soundrecordist #locationsound #sound #soundengineer

Ripon Cathedral, Easter 2026 With the Dean of the Ripon in the Anglo-Saxon crypt built by St Wilfred in 672AD. The oldest part of any cathedral in England. The rest of the building is much more modern - around 14th Century. It was a privilege to refresh my rigging skills and classical mic slinging - been over a decade since I’ve been in the roof of Westminster Abbey or the Royal Albert Hall doing this sort of work - it’s not for the faint of heart Strapped in by a harness, walking the edges of the ceiling and dropping multiple Schoeps and DPA mics to pick up the choir and pipe organ. Anyway - Chris Kalcov mixed the live outside broadcast and it sounded absolutely fantastic. BBC Easter Service, live outside broadcast to the nation. Good, old fashioned public service television.

Filming in Japan. • I really enjoy the fact that I still can’t decode how society works over here. The unspoken rules of deference and extreme politeness. Infantilisation of women, passivity of men. The body language, personal space, eye contact. I can see all the kindness, but don’t see how people do the primal stuff like have sex or go to war. Humanity presented in a way I can’t yet access. • Surprising find - London is now so expensive that eating out Tokyo seems cheap. Is that good or bad?? • #soundrecordist #locationsound #productionsoundmixer #filminginjapan #productionsound

UFC LONDON ✅ • Another faultless outside broadcast with this American client. Small cog in a big machine broadcasting a seven hour live show to 120 countries. Inspiring to work alongside so many talented colleagues who always make very the complex appear very easy. • Now, another aeroplane awaits…… • 🎥🎬🎛️🇯🇵

Why hasn’t anyone talked to me about this? I feel very late to the party. Echoes of that wonderful novel ‘Perfume’ by Patrick Suskind (now over forty yrs old!) It’s quite mad and fun and a simply beautiful piece of original work made to the highest standards of our craft, both in front of and behind the lens. Bravo to all involved.
