The beauty of travelling without relying on tourist guides and travel agencies lies above all in the freedom of movement and the ability to follow itineraries that are not very touristy. It was in an area of southern Thailand, off the tourist radar, that I stumbled upon this scene: an initiation ritual for young monks which I watched with great curiosity and in the midst of an atmosphere of pure authenticity. It is for moments like these that I love to travel and even though it is becoming increasingly difficult, I am always on the lookout for scenes of ordinary everyday life like this. Fortunately, Thailand still offers these beautiful situations.

Io bello di viaggiare senza appoggiarsi a guide turistiche e agenzie di viaggio sta soprattutto nella libertà di movimenti e dal poter percorrere itinerari poco turistici. È proprio in una zona del sud della Thailandia, fuori dal radar dei turisti che sono incappato in questa scena: un rituale di iniziazione per giovani monaci a cui ho assistito durante con grande curiosità e nella circondato da un'atmosfera di massina autenticità. È per momenti come questi che amo viaggiare e anche se è sempre più difficile, sono sempre alla ricerca di scene di ordinaria quotidianità come questa. La Thailandia per fortuna offre ancora queste bellissime situazioni.

Whether motor boats or rowing boats, they are a constant feature in Thailand, as in all of South East Asia.
They are a fundamental part of life in these countries. This photo was taken on a beach in the north of the island of Ko Phangan, where a shoal was at its widest, leaving hundreds of boats lying on the sand, almost like unused wrecks.
Besides their practical use, from a photographic point of view, boats add a lot to the landscape and composition of a shot, giving different readings to simple landscape photos.

Sono parte fondamentale della vita in questi paesi. Questa foto l'ho scattata su una spiaggia nel nord dell'isola di Ko Phangan, c'era una secca al massimo della sua estensione che lasciava centinaia di imbarcazioni adagiate sulla sabbia, quasi come relitti inutilizzati.
Oltre al loro utilizzo pratico, dal punto di vista fotografico, le barche aggiungono molto al paesaggio e alla composizione di uno scatto dando diverse letture a semplici foto paesaggistiche.

One of the most tender scenes I have witnessed during my travels is certainly the one I captured in this photo.
In Sapa – in the north of Vietnam – amidst misty mountains and endless rice terraces, a small child from the Hmong minority peeps out of the window of his house, while he is eating a snack his mother had given him earlier. The curiosity and simplicity with which he looked at me surprised me, as did the simplicity in which the communities of this area live. Sapa was certainly one of my favourite destinations in Vietnam, but I didn't spend much time there. If I were to return to this wonderful country, I would definitely start my journey here.

Una tra le più tenere scene a cui ho assistito durante i miei viaggi, è sicuramente quella che ho catturato in questa foto.
A Sapa, nel nord del Vietnam, tra nebbiose montagne e infiniti terrazzamenti di riso, un piccolo bambino, della minoranza Hmong, fa capolino dalla finestra della sua abitazione mentre mangia una merendina che poco prima la madre gli aveva dato. La curiosità è semplicità con cui mi guardava mi ha spiazzato, come mi ha spiazzato la semplicità in cui vivono le comunità di questa zona. Sapa è stata certamente una delle mie mete preferite in Vietnam, a cui però non ho dedicato molto tempo. Dovessi tornare in questo meraviglioso paese, sicuramente il mio viaggio partirebbe da qui.

Staying on the subject of boats, this photo of a young Vietnamese visiting Hoi An reveals two things. The first, which has already been discussed in the previous post, is how central boats are to life in Southeast Asia, and this young man already seems to have a lot of practice in driving a typical Vietnamese boat.
The second, which is also one of the things that struck me most during my trip to Vietnam, is how extensive domestic tourism is in Vietnam. On several occasions I found myself in touristy or non-touristy places surrounded by Vietnamese visitors. Domestic tourism is definitely an additional resource for this country that I have rarely noticed in other neighbouring countries.

Rimanendo in tema barche in questa foto, che ritrae un giovane Vietnamita in visita ad Hoi An, vengono fuori due realtà; la prima che è stata già trattata nel post precedente è quanto siano centrali le barche nella vita del sud est asiatico, questo ragazzo infatti sembra già essere molto pratico nel guidare una tipica imbarcazione vietnamita.
La seconda, che è anche una delle cose che più mi hanno colpito durante il mio viaggio in Vietnam, è di quanto sia ampio il turismo interno nel Vietnam. In diverse occasioni mi sono ritrovato in posti turistici o meno circondato da visitatori vietnamiti. Il turismo interno è sicuramente una risorsa in più per questo paese che raramente ho notato negli altri paesi limitrofi.

Rome needs no description, Rome speaks for itself. Words are of little use when trying to describe the beauty of this eternal city. Rome is magnificent: every time I visit it, it is always a little more so than before.
This photo was taken on the Sant'Angelo bridge, a typical photographer's spot, with the Tiber, the Vittorio Emanuele II bridge, a glimpse of buildings and the dome of St. Peter's standing out, all topped off with a delicate pink-tinged sunset.
It's hard to find places that are not photographed, but it's just as hard not to find these fantastic places all the same. Rome is beautiful in photos, but in person it's a real dream.

Roma non ha bisogno di una descrizione, Roma parla da sé. A ben poco le parole servono quando si cerca di descrivere la bellezza di questa eterna città. Roma è magnifica, ogni volta che la visito lo è un po' di più rispetto a prima.
Questa foto è stata scattata su ponte Sant'Angelo, un tipico spot per fotografi, con il Tevere, il ponte Vittorio Emanuele II, uno scorcio di edifici e la cupola di San Pietro che spicca sovrana,il tutto condito da un delicato tramonto dalle tinte rosa.
È difficile trovare posti non speculati fotograficamente, ma è altrettanto difficile non trovare questi posti fantastici lo stesso. In foto Roma è bella, ma dal vivo è un sogno.

Among the most touristy and well-known destinations in Vietnam, Halong Bay probably is in the first place. Although it is extremely touristy and therefore far from my itinerary, I decided to visit it during the last days of my stay in the country.
The most convenient and characteristic method is to take part in a mini cruise. I must say that it was probably the only time in my traveller life that I really felt like a real tourist. However, this did not detract in any way from the beauty and magnificence of this extraordinary UNESCO heritage inlet.
The thousands of islets, limestone stacks and caves bring you into a seemingly untouched and paradisiacal place. The hundreds of boats and sailing ships that roam the bay not only don't spoil the scenery, but make it even more interesting, especially at the last light of day. Moreover, the size and breadth of this inlet, aided by the presence of endless monolithic islets, make it possible not to spot other boats or hear extraneous noises in the landscape for a long time.
Halong Bay is definitely the exception that confirms my rule of staying away from touristy places. Vietnam is worth visiting just for the existence of this gem.

The obelisk of the Siccardi Laws increases, in my opinion, the mysterious aura that hovers over the city of Turin, even more so when seen under the magnificent lights of sunset.
Turin is an extraordinary city full of contradictions, historic and modern, traditional and exotic, people-friendly and one of the most polluted cities in Italy.
My short stay here was definitely positive and left me wanting to return.
The obelisk in Piazza Savoia was erected in 1853 to celebrate the passing of the Siccardi laws. It is said that during construction it was decided to bury a time capsule containing objects and information destined to be found at a future time under the monument.
Turin is full of these stories of magic and mystery, making it a unique city in the world.

L'obelisco delle Leggi Siccardi aumenta, a mio parere, l'alone misterico che aleggia sulla città di Torino, ancor di più se visto con le magnifiche luci del tramonto.
Torino è una città straordinaria piena di contraddizioni, storica e moderna, tradizionale ed esotica, a misura d'uomo e città tra le più inquinate d'Italia.
La mia breve permanenza qui è stata sicuramente positiva e ha lasciato in me la voglia di tornare.
L'obelisco di piazza Savoia fu eretto nel 1853 per celebrare l'approvazione delle leggi Siccardi. Si narra che durante la costruzione si decise di far seppellire sotto il monumento una scatola del tempo contenente oggetti e informazioni destinate a essere ritrovate in un’epoca futura.
Torino è piena di queste storie tra il magico e il misterioso, che ne fanno una città unica al mondo.

When planning my trip to Thailand, one of the things that made me most curious was the presence of different local tribes and especially the fact that most of them still lived according to traditional customs. Throughout the trip I tried to visit a few villages, but they were all accessible through travel agencies, which put me off. I guessed, probably right, that it was all a commercial stunt.
During the last few days of my stay in the country, my company and I went out to the north, we went into little-known areas on mopeds and camped in a scenic spot and spent the night at just under 2000m.
The night was a nightmare due to our total lack of preparation; cold, damp and rain made it difficult to sleep. The next morning the only thing we wanted was a hot coffee to help us cope with the freezing temperatures until the warm rays of sunshine arrived. Between coffee and a boiled egg, I made the acquaintance of these two little girls, who approached our tent with curiosity. I found out much later that they were two young people from the Akha ethnic group. The encounter took me by surprise and I managed to take a few photos before the two girls shyly walked away.
Despite the rapidity of the meeting, I was very pleased with how genuine it was.

Hội An is perhaps the most surprising city in Vietnam – totally unexpected.
It is a small town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the result of a complex fusion of local traditions and foreign influences.
Here you can breathe Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Dutch, French and Spanish influences in every corner, from the buildings to the cuisine.
The old town is full of houses and buildings with unique architecture, rarely found in the rest of the country. But the real highlight of Hội An is its unique cuisine, a true example of cultural fusion.
Despite its small size, Hội An has a lot to offer and is always swarming with tourists, which in my opinion doesn't ruin the authentic atmosphere of the city, but rather enhances its ancient role as a multicultural port. Without a doubt, it's a must-see as Vietnam's most famous attractions.

Hội An è forse la città più sorprendente del Vietnam. Totalmente inaspettata.
È un piccolo centro abitato, patrimonio dell'UNESCO ed il frutto di una complessa fusione di tradizioni locali e influenze straniere.
Qui si può respirare il passaggio e l'influsso giapponese, indiano, cinese, olandese, francese e spagnolo, in ogni angolo, dagli edifici alla cucina.
La città vecchia ospita case ed edifici con architetture uniche e raramente rinvenibili nel resto del paese, ma il vero punto forte di Hội An è sicuramente la cucina, unica nel suo genere e vero è proprio esempio di fusione culturale.
Nonostante le piccole dimensioni, Hội An ha tantissimo da offrire ed è sempre brulicante di turisti, cosa che però a mio parere non rovina l'atmosfera autentica della città, anzi ne esalta l'antico ruolo di porto multiculturale. Senza dubbio è una tappa obbligatoria al pari delle più famose attrazioni del Vietnam.

During one of my last visits to Rome, I stayed in a bed and breakfast in Santa Maria Maggiore Square. The window of the room overlooked the square and the majestic church of Santa Maria Maggiore. When in the capital I always enjoy visiting the countless churches, from the smallest and unknown to the most famous and largest.
The basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was strangely unknown to me, so I immediately took the opportunity to visit it.
The impact is impressive, the wide apse and the twenty-one side columns leave one feeling small in front of this architecture. The nave, despite being composed of coffers decorated with gold elements, is simple and elegant. What we see today is the result of numerous interventions over the centuries by different popes. Santa Maria Maggiore is definitely one of my favourite churches in Rome and I recommend spending half an hour there as soon as you can again.

In una delle mie ultime visite a Roma, ho alloggiato in un bed and breakfast in piazza Santa Maria Maggiore.
La finestra della camera affacciava proprio sulla piazza e sulla maestosa chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore. Nella capitale ho sempre piacere a visitare le innumerevoli chiese, dalle più piccole e sconosciute a quelle più famose e grandi.
La basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore mi era stranamente sconosciuta, così ho immediatamente approfittato per visitarla.
L'impatto è impressionante, l'ampia abside e le ventuno colonne laterali lasciano un senso di piccolezza di fronte a questa architettura. La navata, nonostante sia composta da cassettoni decorati con elementi di in oro, è semplice ed elegante. Quella che vediamo oggi è il risultato di numerosi interventi durante i secoli, dei diversi papi. Santa Maria Maggiore è sicuramente una delle chiese che preferisco a Roma e consiglio, appena sarà di nuovo possibile di dedicargli una mezz'ora.
