A peek under the blanket of Extinctions Alp, 2026.
Collected from industrial lots, backyards, crusty berms, and my own store of daily detritus. These 300+ objects form the rubble that is packed tightly under the gallery’s reclaimed Kauri bench seat, a ‘busy with his hands’ effigal figure, and a luxury woollen blanket.
Comprising of (very heavy) rocks, broken branches, old tech, rusty and soot laden pieces of the built environment and even the odd sun bleached bone (not human). These pieces have been gathered, lovingly painted in Porter’s Paints ‘Rubble’ (thanks @viv__teo ) and patiently placed in an ossuary-like cavity. They form a kind of tortured sediment laid down over centuries as a result of violence, greed, and capitalist plunder. Where indigenous knowledge is rendered invisible, where past (and current) horrors are swiftly buried, and our communities weft and warp is frayed by a thousand mean spirited cuts. All in the name of what?
This year let’s vote these selfish deluded men OUT.
3 Statues for a Square is on @cassstreet.gallery Kororāreka until March 17, 2026

Two faces side by side Before a broken city,
And the devastation is beyond words.
Behind them are houses that were laughter
And have become memories.
They stand not because fear has vanished,
But because the brokenness
Has not broken them.🇵🇸💔
