Happy 10th (!!) bday to the world’s sweetest boy, my Harrison. You are passionate, sensitive, empathetic, confident, and kind. From the school librarian to the crossing guard, everyone tells me how much you light up their day. Tonight after you opened your presents, you told us that the best gift of all was that we could be together. Thanks for not being too cool to snuggle your mom in the morning or sing show tunes in the car. You are just the best and I am so lucky you’re mine #HJM

Friends and family in Ohio and beyond, please join us to celebrate the incredible life and work of my dad, Jay Bolotin. An exhibition of his work will be open to the public on July 18th and 19th, with a reception and memorial on the afternoon of July 20th from 1-3pm. On the 21st there will be an informal celebration starting at 2pm, where friends and loved ones are welcome to say a few words, sing a song (Harrison has been practicing), or have a bourbon in his honor. I hope to see you there!

Jay Bolotin, 1949-2024. Artist, composer, visionary, friend…people knew him as many different things, but to me he was just dad. There are no words to describe the void that has been left in the world and in my life without him. Always my biggest supporter, his voice would light up whenever I would call. “Simone!” he would say, with a big smile radiating through the line. He hated to fly, so sometimes would drive overnight to New York just to take me to lunch, then drive all the way back to Ohio to work another 20 hour day in the studio. He made my childhood magical, always respecting children as equals. From flying homemade kites in the park, to searching for fairies in the creek near his childhood home in Kentucky, to telling my brother and me the most epic bedtime stories, he approached fatherhood just like he approached everything he loved: with complete dedication and tireless passion. It’s hard to put into words the beauty and complexity of how his mind worked. He fused technology and the physical world to create animated motion pictures unlike anything that has been seen before, but never quite figured out how to use FaceTime. He cherished his friends so deeply, corresponding via handwritten letters with many loved ones all over the world for decades. Delmore Recording Society, who recently re-released a record of his haunting folk songs from the 1970s said it best: “He was a man not of this world. A man from another time and space who crafted singular songs and art mined from the depths of his soul, where clocks tick backwards and characters walk but never arrive. He was a Renaissance man in search of a play worthy of his talent.” They broke the mold when they made my dad, and I am eternally grateful to have been his daughter.
