Dans ce concert où la voix est entourée de cordes, les grands thèmes du compositeur américain se dévoilent sous un jour nouveau, plus intime, plus fragile, plus onirique. Autour de la voix d’Anne Carleton, un ensemble de musiciens d’exception explore les couleurs et les résonances des cordes. Le pianiste Christophe Cravero offre une approche très contemporaine du répertoire : piano préparé, travail direct sur les cordes de l’instrument et création de boucles sonores viennent transformer certains thèmes emblématiques, dont Summertime. Le violoniste Johan Renard signe un arrangement original du thème How Long Has This Been Going On, spécialement conçu pour l’occasion. La texture musicale s’enrichit également de la présence singulière de Simon Drappier, qui fait entendre l’arpeggione, instrument rare du XIXᵉ siècle, à mi-chemin entre la guitare et le violoncelle. Sa sonorité profonde et veloutée apporte une couleur inattendue et poétique à ce dialogue entre la voix et les cordes.
