Gybing Drills Part 2
‘RIG
@90 BEACHSTART’ 🏄♂️
I was once asked, what would you do if you were learning to gybe again 🤔
Answer 👉 ‘RIG
@90 ’ beachstarts.
They’re gybe training gold and continue on from our recent ‘BeachGybe’ exercise. At first they’re hard, but this exercise tells you very quickly where you’re going wrong in your gybe technique.
Q. Why Do Windwise ‘Rig
@90 ’ BeachStarts?
A. If you’re…
New to gybing & want to learn quickly
Been gybing for years yet still not nailing them
You make gybes, but don’t plane out
What Exactly Is It - Don’t you mean ‘clew first’?
Steer the board round into a beachstart with the sail ‘the opposite way round’
BUT rig is ‘held’ at ’90 DEGREES’ to the board
Come up on a very broad reach - RIG
@90 - rotate the sail whilst downwind
Simulates turning the board & improves rig handling and vision post foot change
Trains the importance of rotating a rig downwind - never across the wind
Trains you to keep and release the sail ‘Rig
@90 ’ degrees to the board heading downwind
** NOT ‘Clew First’ across the wind on a beam reach **
WISE WORDS
** For non-planing gybes, sail downwind ‘Rig
@90 ’ after the foot switch, get steady and then rotate the rig
** For planing exits, ‘Rig
@90 ’ is only for a split second — early foot change (dead downwind) and as soon as the new front foot hits the deck, release the clew hand
Repeat, repeat and repeat 🔁 until you can do them planing
