Brinkmann examines the relationship between bodies, objects and space. Working with light, sound, and found/fabricated elements, she considers how infrastructures are reframed and acted on, shifting our orientation to environments. Accordingly, she has responded to the exhibition as a space in which to intervene.
Held together with magnets, hooks and straps, the two constructions operate as a double act. Designing Against Vandalism is made from galvanised racking, detached from support, flipped and stacked to form a rickety cubicle. The space within invites the body, but the structure’s dimensions would surely prove prohibitively tight. A sheet of perforated steel in place of a solid panel on one side hints at the hush of confessional booths. A single strobe is lowered into the cubicle, flashing blue light downwards at slow but incessant intervals.
Hard Shoulder is a barrier-like structure made from welded steel supports, a foldable double mattress and a rusting metal sheet, fastened with hessian strap and bungee rope. Facing the wall, it leaves a narrow gap just too small for passage. Three strobe lights placed in this corridor flicker frantically, generating a polyrhythmic interlace of light and sound.
Speaking to the politics of enclosure, these works disrupt spatial perception, confusing any sense of clear demarcation between public and private space.

Of All Time is a limited edition multiple produced on the occasion of the group exhibition RELAY [02] at Platform A, Middlesbrough.
The assemblage brings together a range of found and fabricated elements, including steel mesh, rubber-coated magnets, steel box-section tubing and printed material, extending Simona Brinkmann’s long-standing exploration of the relationship between bodies, objects and space.
At the centre of the work is a low-resolution image sourced by the artist online, depicting a goat improbably suspended from a telephone wire. The absurdity of the scene prompts questions about authenticity in an era increasingly shaped by AI-generated imagery. Brinkmann deliberately retains the image’s degraded, pixelated quality, and leans into it by scaling up its dimensions - working against the conventions of high-definition fine art printing and reinforcing her interest in materials and images that occupy an ambiguous or low-status position.
Suspended and immobilised between these elements, the goat becomes both subject and metaphor. It is caught within a system of forces that simultaneously support, constrain and display it. The overlaid mesh alters the image, unexpectedly sharpening its contours while further implicating the perforated steel structure in the act of seeing.
Simona Brinkmann was born in Milan and is based in Nottingham. She studied at Middlesex University and Central Saint Martins, graduating with an MA in Fine Art in 2006. Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, including projects at Fondazione Per L'Arte in Rome, The Art House, and Scolacium Archaeological Park.

RELAY [02] is the second stage of a group exhibition in two parts, co-curated by hardcopy* and Thomas Griffiths. Staged across two cities that share a common industrial heritage - Sheffield and Middlesbrough - the exhibition brings together a diverse range of concerns, considering how objects and surfaces carry layered histories and reveal the residues of industrial processes, environmental change, and human activity.
hardcopy* is a publishing and curatorial platform established by Nick Kennedy in 2024, that commissions, produces and distributes editions made in collaboration with artists.
Each artist included in RELAY is a past, present, or future hardcopy* collaborator.
RELAY [01] was presented at Gloam Gallery, Sheffield, in November 2025 and included work by Tony Charles, Rachel Deakin, Nick Kennedy, and Will Hughes. Limited edition prints and multiples are available through both Platform A and hardcopyshop.com, with new artist editions to be released throughout the exhibition.
About a month since Gentle Revolts closed @blocprojects in Sheffield, so here is a belated thank you to everyone who came to see the show, along with a heads up that deets of the next shindig are on the way.
