Poster design for »Schindler Space Architect«, premiering today @adfilmfest NY! Featuring a photograph of the Kings Road House by @monakuhnstudio , ‘Beam, 2021’. A few coincidences lead to this project: we first encountered the work of the architect R.M. Schindler thanks to @guy.pimienta . Despite being often deemed a modernist, Schindler developed quite another kind of architecture, tailored to people, space and budget. He is regarded by historians as one of the major architects of the 20th century yet remains mostly known to specialists. This growing interest lead us to discover @rmsdocumentary , that was in the making at the time. The filmmaker Valentina Ganeva gave us the opportunity to work on the film’s graphics. Going through Schindler’s archives we encountered yet another side of his work: his graphic expressionism. He developed a unique body of letterings alongside his architecture, which has many inventive and subtle variations. We catalogued these from multiple sources such as blueprints, letterheads, drawings, signage and drew a custom typeface for the film. It became a monospace influenced by Schindler’s drawings and historical references that accompanied his life and work: Wiener Werkstatt, Los Angeles of the early 20th century, grid-based designs, german romanticism… a whole program! #rmschindler

Schindler Space Architect a feature length documentary by Valentina Ganeva (@rmsdocumentary ) on R.M. Schindler is premiering at the Architecture & Design Film Festival (@adfilmfest ) in New York this September 27th! Followed by the west coast premiere October 20th at @newportbeachfilmfest . We had the pleasure to work on the graphics and a custom typeface inspired by research of Schindler’s archive. It is narrated by Meryl Streep and Udo Kier. The film features Frank Gehry, Steven Holl, Thom Mayne and many more. #rmschindler

»Littoral« explores the french coast through artistic, philosophical, scientific and historical contributions including an original artwork by Daniel Pontoreau. Thoughts, ideas, references and conversations are stored as a second mode of narration in a glossary at the bottom of each page. When Verner Panton launched his variation on a cantilever chair — a design invention of the 1920s —, people refused to call it such. Recently, Jasper Morrison published his take on this theme, reducing material and making it mono material — hence recyclable. I am playing on the idea of variation and seamless transition all staying within a theme. What qould intermediates between Panton and Morison look? This is an exploration of how variable fonts can be used to transition between designs and playing on the idea of design progress.
