In life there are moments that stay with you, and this one is certainly that for me.
Just over a week soaking in all the feels from @simmasocial x Lady Shaka, and I want to pour my heart out because it’s a rare full-circle moment that hits deep, and a story I’m really proud to share.
Lady Shaka, the twins, and I have known each other since we were just kids. We all went to the same kura (school), part of a small Māori immersion unit where every class subject was taught in te reo. Our school life grounded in te ao Māori. Growing up side by side, te ao Māori shaped us long before we understood how deeply it would guide who we’d become.
To reconnect all these years later, to come back to each other in this exact way… doing what we love, what we’ve always loved, representing Ngai Māori… it’s a feeling I’ll never forget.
From taking the twins on for management to being able to put on Shaka’s Naarm show, hearing our community describe that space as safe, empowering, and affirming moved me to tears.
The wairua in that room was undeniable. I felt our tūpuna right there with all of us. I felt guided. I felt strong.
Shaka has always been HER. A visionary. Unapologetic. Bright and resilient in her own way. A natural born leader without ever trying to be one. Someone who walked with confidence and carried purpose with a fire we all gravitated toward.
To see her now, exactly as we always saw her, I’m forever in awe.
Watching her shine feels like watching a prophecy unfold.
It was my absolute honour and privilege to hold this space for her. I’m so proud I could burst. So grateful. So humbled to witness all of this, and to witness her.
