It’s been 1 year since we launched Table and we have learned so much. Table is a collective of @ocaduniversity industrial design alumni, students, and friends with a mission to demystify the industry, amplify diverse leaders + mentors, and redefine industrial design. Born out of frustration and desire for a creative community, at the start of 2020 we were reflecting on data @designerti shared about the gender imbalance in our industry as part of a larger conversation about #BiasInDesign. As women of colour in design, this was a shift in feeling seen for how bias has impacted our experiences and those around us. As the industry reconciles with this and education evolves to push it forward, we saw a need to bridge the gap between education and the industry. With the support of our community we have launched a fireside chat series ‘Pull Up A Chair’, connected alumni across graduating classes, consulted on university course content, people have kindly volunteered their time (free work!), we actively share resources with students, worked with @ocaducead - woo! 🎉 And, of course, this came with many lessons: grant writing is tough, social media marketing, free work!!! and the challenge of striving to instill our values as a collective in every decision we make. Each of these challenges has pushed us to think of new solutions for how to build better and we are so excited for what we have in store this year. To each of you who have supported us along the way, it means so much. Thank you! 🙏💙✨ - Stay tuned by subscribing to our quarterly newsletter, where we share updates, opportunities, events of our own and across the design community 👀 Sign up at the link in @table_inds bio!

Our names are central to our identity, yet too often they’re mispronounced, misspelled, or simply overlooked. This is especially the case for people of colour (POC), who may have what you might consider “ethnic” names. What if our tools could keep us accountable and make the people in our lives feel respected and noticed? As diversity & inclusion becomes all the rage, we ask how this translates into our day-to-day behaviour of interacting with others. For now, we must start with knowing it is always important to check and just ask - “am I saying it right?”. @amsngly , @clarakyw , and I propose a few features that build on top of existing interactions in our day-to-day lives. We chose to focus on Google given its popularity and ease of use. However, with the simplicity of the concept, we see it easily applied on other platforms as well. (LinkedIn is already on it!) When we repeatedly spell or pronounce names incorrectly, we’re telling others that their name isn’t worthy of our respect. This is our belated submission for the design challenge by @designerti @renderweekly #rwdesignbias
