Silverbrush Ambassador, @mcaloiaro , writes: This was a fun painting to work on, so I thought I’d share some in-progress pictures I took as I was working on it. Most of my work is painted in a very direct manner, but with this painting, I went for an even more direct approach. The Russian impressionists have long been one of my biggest influences, and I tried hard with this painting to follow that method of painting. As you can see in the early photos, I don’t start paintings with a lot of specific structure. Rather I start with big abstract shapes, and slowly refine as I let the painting kind of decide where it wants to go. I like to use natural hog bristle brushes to achieve these type effects in the mark making process. I especially like Silver Brush natural hog hair, extra long filberts. These brushes allow for very gestural, heavy strokes. Sometimes there is a brush so versatile, you can create an entire painting with just that brush. While I don’t always paint that way, sometimes it is an interesting approach, similar to working in a limited palette.
