Symbiotic Currents.
Symbiotic Currents is an interactive installation that symbolises the connection between energy networks in nature and in technology. It highlights the role of humans in bridging the gap and facilitating the harmony between the two. The installation embraces an optimistic view of the future, and invites its audience to participate in the creation of that future.
Energy takes many different forms and travels between a variety of objects and organisms. It circulates through networks of electricity as well as through networks found in nature. Whether it flows through cables or through roots; energy communicates and exchanges.
In ‘’Symbiotic Currents’’, this process can be seen in motion. Two constructions of countless root-like cables hang high in the air. The viewer has to look up, situating them far under the ground. One network is noticeably larger than the other – and while this hub is filled with moving particles of light, the smaller object is dark and empty. Their roots seem to be reaching towards each other, trying desperately to touch, to connect. Yet they are still an arms-length away. Fortunately, that makes it the perfect length for humans to bridge the gap. All it takes is one person willing to put in the effort, and the link can be made; the light can now flow freely between the mother tree and her kin.
Humans are often viewed as forming blockades in nature. While they often indeed do – in the shape of cutting down forests, polluting the air and dirtying the waters of the planet – there is a danger in only seeing the negative effects that humanity has. By viewing the destruction of the earth as something inevitable, we run the risk of forgetting that there are still things that can be done. Not only to prevent the downfall, but even to make things better than they are now. ‘’Symbiotic Currents’’ follows the principles of Solarpunk; a movement that envisions a brighter future where humanity can form a bridge between technology and nature, creating a symbiosis between all these elements.
