American Dream, 1984
Series statement
In the 1980s, a Cadillac was a clear symbol of success in America.
It represented money, status, and the idea that hard work could lead to a better life.
But that dream did not look the same for everyone.
For many Black Americans, these symbols of prosperity were visible but not always accessible. Social and economic barriers often kept them outside the image of the American Dream.
In this series, a Black bride appears inside a 1984 Cadillac.
The image places her directly inside a symbol of luxury and success that historically did not always include people like her.
The photographs ask a simple question:
Who was the American Dream meant for - and has it truly become accessible to people of all races and backgrounds?
