Sleepy Bloc started as a pipe dream with a ton of nights falling asleep in public spaces. Just before the first COVID-19 lock down hit, I met Luke, who had begun his second phase in coffee as an understudy to roasting and Roastery Logistics. I'd come into the shop where Lukey would feed me cups as a faux passe QC/blind taste. This was usually followed by infamous double breakfasts. Amidst this loitering, I also started learning about coffee as a business from my old friend DJ (what up
@dapperino !), a connection from a previous life in hospitality that would bring me back-ish to the scene.
When LGA lock down started to relax, an opportunity arose, and between Luke, myself, and Camie 8000km away – we decided to "roast and sell some f'n' coffee." Try to, anyway. Five years later and Sleepy Bloc as a brand still stands, and that isn't possible without any of us at helm, and at times, Sisyphus-ing the tougher times.
It's with an absolutely clear head and heart that I'm letting everyone know of Luke's decision to separate from Sleepy Bloc operations. Between the four of us, we've experienced plenty of highs and lows. This business and brand has been so personal to us that, when disagreement or fighting arises, we could've thrown our hands up, pointed fingers, and pulled the plug on the whole thing. But that's not what family does, and that's why the SB BOFO's Coffee Gang is something that goes beyond coffee and business. We saw the most challenging sides of each other and always found a way to work through it and create and achieve some pretty surreal things from it.
We unconditionally and fully support Luke as he endeavours to grow his career and his personal brand,
@signedbyskinny . I am truly happy to have grown with my surrogate younger brother and learn as much as I did from the experiences of this wild ride so far together. He championed the mindset that having textbook, scientific knowledge about coffee and how to roast it wasn't enough to excel at working in it – that you /always/ had to know how the product translates at bar and to the consumer's palette and subsequently, preferences. One of the best and far from his peak.
