newest piece for my printmaking and textiles class !! it’s currently up in the installation gallery in the art building so wu ppl you should go check it out :) This piece takes inspiration from Mexican talavera tile work and the huge presence of religion in Mexican culture. La Virgen de Guadalupe is a symbol of abundance and she is greatly revered in Mexican culture. She has become an icon that has been reinterpreted many times to the point where Catholic devotion is not the main subject of her power. I was not raised Catholic despite Catholicism being very important to much of my extended family and yet La Virgen de Guadalupe holds a lot of meaning and comfort to me. The religious imagery in this piece speaks to my own experience as a person of Mexican descent constantly finding myself grappling with my identity and searching for where I fit in. The gold frames are attached to the larger piece by only a pin so as to represent the fragility of my connection to these religious images. They are a part of me and something that contributes to my identity but they are not stagnant and they are not fully woven into my being. They move in the wind and evolve with me.
