TW: Abuse and Trafficking are mentioned in this post.
Sex education in 10th grade, according to the National Sex Ed Standards (NSES), looks such as:
👍🏼: Learning about the pros and cons of different birth control methods
👍🏼: How to use condoms correctly
👍🏼: How to discuss with a partner about choosing abstinence, using birth control methods, and STI prevention
...and many more useful lessons that will benefit youth for the rest of their lives.
The sex education that NSES discusses is all about inclusion, being medically accurate, and gender-affirming. SIECUS cares about the youth of America and their education, that is why we support NSES. #SexEdforAll #SexEdforSocialChange
✅ True: Every grade level should be taught "sex education."
❌ False: "Sex education" is always education about the act of sex (i.e. condoms, dental dams, and birth control.)
Yes, fifth graders need "sex education," but the standards and curriculum of it might not be what you think. In fifth grade, "sex education" is all about building self-esteem, learning consent, and understanding puberty, among other important topics. Learning these things help young people become confident and help protect them from predators. 📝
Sex education is more than learning about safe sex. Sex education also teaches young people how to lead safe and healthy lives. 😀❤️

If you’re wondering “how do I talk to my kids about this?”, you’re not alone. Millions of parents are asking the same question. The lack of action and release of survivors’ information reveal we’re not meant to talk about violence and power.
Comprehensive sex ed teaches young people that their bodies belong to them, gives them the language to recognize abuse, and pathways to report harm to trusted adults.
