´Contemplation’ Made of walnut wood, the chair and its ambo were designed to encourage an active posture, upright but yet comfortable. Inspired by traditional church pews, the straight back and short seat are designed to support the contemplative. While it supports a book, the pedestal table allows the contemplative to remain open to the surrounding space by being placed on the side. The pieces were designed and manufactured by the designer herself. Come to see it at the graduation show @designacademyeindhoven until Sunday 27/10 #dutchdesignweek #designacademyeindhoven #design #furniture #walnut #walnutwood #contemplation #contemplative #chair #chairdesign #ambo #meditation #christian #christianity #church #benches #sprituality

This week, I’m happy to present my ‘Contemplation’ project at the Graduation Show, featured by @designacademyeindhoven at Microstad, during the @dutchdesignweek 2024, Eindhoven. Come and discover my work at the space 2 of the building. « Sit down to experience a mesmerizing moment. ‘Contemplation’ reintroduces meditative practices from Western Christian heritage, addressing openness to faith and epiphany. Modern life is hyper-fast and overstimulating. This handcrafted triptych offers a space for silence and reflection, inspired by Luc Ruedin’s 2024 book ‘Exercices de contemplation’. A book, mobile, and chair, created from Christian symbols, provide a space for Oraison. This heart-to-heart prayer encourages morning serenity through conscious sitting and active observation. Sidonie Devienne shares the vibrancy that meditative and religious practice can bring to one’s life. Aligning spirit, body, and soul with tenderness, one can almost touch another immaterial space. Visitors are invited to take home a bead designed after the rosary as a token of their contemplative experience. » #design #dutchdesignweek #designacademyeindhoven #dae #designacademyalumni #contemplation #spiritual #christianity #mobile #triptych #wood #rosary #meditation #prayer

“Chlordecone spraying in Martinique is one of those stories no one talks about, yet what’s beautiful is all the resources needed to fight it exist on its land. I wanted to really understand the problem within its context, and be able to go at it from its roots.” @sidonie_devienne Picture by @sidonie_devienne @chloecouasnon and @zv.rluk

ADSORPTION by Sidonie Devienne   The volcanic tropical island of Martinique, a Caribbean French territory since the 17th century, conceals a secret: the scandal of chlordecone pesticide.   Chlordecone spraying in Martinique occurred from 1972 to 1993, resulting in an ecological disaster. The attempt to prevent financial losses for banana exporters by eradicating banana weevils led to the contamination of Martinique’s soil, water, flora, and fauna for the next 700 years.   ‘Adsorption’ raises awareness against pollution on Martinique for the oblivious French mainland. The installation educates viewers on the multifaceted scandal and its possible solution, using natural carbon to pull chlordecone from the environment through adsorption. Twelve charcoal totems represent a chlordecone-caused issue and corresponding activated carbon resource, each highlighted location carrying a fragment of Martinique’s cultural history. The map on which they are placed displays contamination levels and are accompanied by catalogs for visitors to explore the story in depth. @sidonie_devienne Pictures by @sidonie_devienne @chloecouasnon and @zv.rluk
