🕯️✨Join us Saturday, May 23rd from 1-3pm with wax sculptor Heather O’Shaughnessy @salondecire for an afternoon exploring sympathetic magic through the quiet ritual of sculpting wax poppets. A poppet is a small hand-formed figure traditionally used in folk practices as a symbolic stand in for a person, animal, intention, or desired outcome.
Found across many historical traditions, poppets were often crafted from humble materials such as cloth, wax, or clay and incorporated botanicals chosen for their symbolic, healing and magical associations. Rooted in the practice of sympathetic magic, the idea that an object can symbolically influence what it represents, the poppet has long functioned as a ritual tool.
In this workshop, we will spend the afternoon sculpting poppets from beeswax, incorporating herbs and thoughtfully setting personal intentions as we work, exploring the point where art meets intention.
All materials provided with extra molding wax to take home. No experience necessary.

✨Antique Spotlight✨
The “Violet Ray” is a historical “quack” device. At the time, the device was believed to cure things such as baldness, arthritis, asthma, toothaches, brain fog, and hysteria. It is a handheld Tesla coil that emits high voltage UV light through gas filled electrodes. Since they delivered no real medical benefit, the devices were eventually seized in the 1940s and 50s by the FDA, and the producing companies were sued.
Sideshow is full of little pieces of history, and we love to share the backstory behind some of our strangest antiques.
Date & Time: Sunday, May 24th from 12-2:30pm

I have always been a sculptor and for as long as I can remember sculpting has been an intuitive motion of my hands. I used to create tiny little clay figures when I was little. I would infuse them with hearts to make them come alive. Later I was naturally drawn to the idea of poppets , the history and craft of using effigies and symbolic figures in folk magic traditions.
I had used clay in the past and also pure beeswax figures, twigs and cloth. I wanted to create a moldable wax that accepted herbs and oils easily and worked for hand forming figures. During the pandemic I experimented with several recipes using only natural oils and beeswax. I created a wax that can be softened in warm water and works really well for hand forming poppets. People, animals, symbols. I would love to share the recipe with you at the upcoming POPPETS, OUR FAITHFUL HELPERS workshop at @sideshowgallerychicago on Saturday May 23rd ! I will be bringing lots of Poppet Wax to sculpt, herbs to adorn , recipe cards, and examples of poppets held in museums. Let’s exchange ideas and explore the myriad of ways we can partner with these magical helpers✨
