Back for a little documentary encore. Less formal, unscripted so I get to chat to the Murdochs during breaks. Lennie gonna get me a concrete overcoat as a leaving present. Must be a Glasgow thing.

Watching Eric Saward being interviewed for the new Twin Dilemma disc. Unpopular opinion but I have always loved Eric Saward's work on Doctor Who, I like his personality, his slightly nasty style and how he doesn't pull his punches in interviews. I think without him the show would have been a tepid, toothless mess during the mid '80s. He was a necessary foil to JN-T at his unbridled, glittery showbiz peak. Having said that I love Chris Bidmead and Andrew Cartmel as well though their styles were very different. (I think I like all the Dr Who script editors and think that they would have been brilliant show runners if the show had been written then as it is in the 21st century.) Time is cruel and doesn't run at the same speed for everyone, and can accelerate unexpectedly in rapid bursts. (I know that only too well from my own decline.) Seeing him suddenly so frail and shaking is a shock.

Surviving winter in Dumbarton. Extra long exhaust pipe from the diesel heater acts like a radiator, albeit one that is hot enough to melt, scorch and burn. Unrelated, my recurring dreams of being stranded hundreds or thousands away from home and trying to get back (but not remembering where I live) have been superceded by dreams where I'm relating to people in far off places and no longer stressing about getting home. Don't know quite what it means but it feels like an untethering. Letting go.

Blu-ray is a wonderful physical medium. I used to buy SACDs but this has got to be the ultimate format for music recordings. No vinyl junkie on Earth will persuade me that a plastic groove can compete with a 96k/24-bit digital release mixed and mastered from the original multitrack studio tapes at Abbey Road. I've been listening to these in 5.1 DTS surround on my old Genelecs. One day I'll sell a kidney or submit myself to some dangerous experimental drug trials to pay for a good Dolby Atmos system but for now this'll do. I have been experimenting with some 35-year-old music demos transferred from cassette. I was able to restore and enhance the recordings then subsequently separate out all of the instruments, vocals, drums, cymbals etc and create an immersive 5.1 surround mix of a demo tape recorded in 1991. I intend to do the same for New Order's Power, Corruption & Lies album when I get the time. I'm going to study these new surround mixes for inspiration and calibration then attempt to do something of similar quality using the clever tools at my disposal. Ditto Substance 1987. I don't have any way to make high definition DTS copies or Dolby Atmos masters but I can create a decent 5.1 Surround mix for DVD.

Blagged a pair of these for just over ÂŁ250. I needed a spare pair for working away from home/on the road. In spite of the reviews I wasn't expecting them to be so good. They're generally retailing for ÂŁ150 each but they sound as good as (perhaps even better than) some other brands that I've had in the past which cost more than double. Adam Audio T5V.
