Day 2 of the Applied Item Response Theory (IRT) training in Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦
As the training continues, our Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning Director Mr. Nobelrich Makere is participating in practical sessions exploring how assessment data can better support learning outcomes across Africa.
One of today’s key discussions centered around a simple but powerful question:
“Given a learner’s ability, what is the probability that they answer a specific item correctly?”
This shift in thinking helps move education beyond scores alone and toward understanding how learners engage with content, where they struggle, and how support can be improved.
At Shule Direct, this resonates deeply with our mission of helping learners and educators access quality learning and teaching resources anytime and anywhere. Understanding how learners interact with educational content is essential in building digital learning experiences that are accessible, responsive, and truly learner-centered.

Day 1 of the ZIQUE – Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Pilot in Zanzibar 📚💻
Our team is currently in Zanzibar supporting the implementation of the Zanzibar Improving Quality of Basic Education (ZIQUE) – Virtual Learning Environment pilot initiative in partnership with the Zanzibar Institute of Education (ZIE) @taasisiyaelimuzanzibar2 school leaders, teachers, and other education stakeholders.📚💻
Currently being rolled out across selected schools in Unguja, the initiative is focused on strengthening the use of digital learning content in classrooms through teacher orientations, classroom demonstrations, technical support, and continuous engagement with school communities.
This pilot represents an important step toward building more inclusive, engaging, and technology-enabled learning environments for both teachers and students.
By working directly with educators in classrooms, we are not only supporting the adoption of digital learning tools, but also gathering critical feedback that will help improve content quality, usability, and curriculum alignment for future scale-up across Zanzibar.
Through collaboration, innovation, and shared commitment to quality education, we are helping shape learning experiences that are interactive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of today’s learners, while continuing to strengthen digital learning ecosystems and expand access to meaningful learning opportunities for learners across Zanzibar and Tanzania at large. 🌍✨

Our Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) Director Nobelerich Makere is currently participating in the Applied Item Response Theory (IRT) Course for Education and Policy in Africa organized by the African Foundational Learning Data Hub (AFLEARN) at the University of Cape Town @university_of_cape_town , South Africa, from 11th–15th May 2026.
The course focuses on strengthening competencies in analysing large-scale assessment data using modern psychometric approaches, with emphasis on practical application, ethical considerations, and policy relevance.
Participation in this training aligns with Shule Direct’s commitment to strengthening data-driven education systems and improving foundational learning outcomes through evidence-based interventions.
The knowledge and skills gained will support us in enhancing learning assessment, improving the quality of assessment tools, strengthening internal research and MEAL systems, and generating more reliable evidence to inform programme design and decision-making.
The training will also contribute to advancing inclusive education by strengthening Shule Direct’s capacity to analyse learning disparities across different learner groups and support targeted interventions for improved learning equity.
Through continued investment in technical capacity and innovation, we remain committed to improving access to equitable, inclusive, and quality education through digital solutions and evidence-based approaches.

On the International Day to End Corporal Punishment, we stood alongside partners like @savethechildrentz@uniceftz@hakielimu@wildaftz and many others to reaffirm a simple but urgent truth: violence has no place in a child’s learning journey.
As much as we ensure that every child can access learning resources anytime and anywhere, access alone is not enough - every child deserves a safe, supportive environment that allows them to participate, grow, and reach their full potential. Safe learning spaces build confidence, encourage expression, and empower children to truly learn.
Corporal punishment does the opposite. It instills fear, limits engagement, and undermines both learning and well-being showing that discipline through violence is neither effective nor sustainable.
As part of a collective national effort to end corporal punishment, we actively contribute to the Corporal Punishment Thematic Working Group - a coalition of partners including Save the Children @savethechildrentz , UNICEF @uniceftz , Haki Elimu @hakielimu and others working together to advocate for policy reform, promote positive discipline, and drive coordinated action to protect children across all learning environments.
The change starts with all of us - because every child needs and deserves a safe learning environment to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
