much like 2020, 2021 came with tough challenges for many industries which made the temptation to stop working altogether very easy.
it took plenty of resolve to push through the creative isolation, persevere and even have the courage to release work that i've delayed for so long!
i released a pilot that had been in post-production for the entire year. dragging my feet from crippling doubt almost drowning in self sabotage.
despite all that, the feeling i have now, makes it all worth it. the amount of encouragement and positive comments from people who have watched it is all that i needed to realise how important this work is and to never give up on something you really believe in.
anyway, enough mushy chat. thank you to everyone i had the pleasure to work with this year.

taking an idea from it's most infant state and developing it with an untold amount of rewrites and editing, layering it with meaning and context, enlisting these talents to personify the characters, and attempting to shoot throughout the multiple of melbourne's lockdowns has been one of the most exhausting and exhilarating creative projects i've ever embarked upon (particularly since this is my very first venture into screen writing / filmmaking). i can't wait to see where this goes!
we've managed to pull this all off with the smallest of small teams (literally just our actors, myself and @mrs_fallback on deck).
i can't wait to share what we've been hard at work creating!

There is a bit of Junior in all of us.
'Hoodboy June' represents a generation of young people seemingly directionless.
We tell them to build a strong foundation but they don't use stone, they grasp at straws.
It's our responsibility to lead them not just through actions, but with engagement and communication.
Communication is so lacking in our community. That has to change.

I once thought I was inferior growing up in Australia.
It must've been partly because I didn't see anyone that looked like me on TV.
So, much of my cultural influences came from overseas, particularly America.
This meant I never really felt Australian, because, what does Australian look like?
Blonde hair? Blue eyes? Bondi Beach? Yes, of course. But what else?
Not until recently have I come to understand that identity is such an important element of self-realization.
It can be an important factor in determining one's loyalty to their nationality and ethnicity.
When it skews too much to one side, it can foster disillusionment for the other.
There must be harmony between the two, and for me, culture is one of the biggest avenues that we can utilize to bring this about.
Culture is art. Art imitates life. Life happens in all corners of Australia, not just Bondi Beach.
There is a movement happening right now and it makes me so proud to see Polynesian people pushing their stories and experiences to the forefront and being proud of their heritage. All of which has led me to this point.
LIANA was a script I started working on as a way to channel many of my own and my family's experiences growing up in Australia. It began as a short film but together with @likesunray , we slowly turned it into a pilot.
My hope is that this story exposes and educates all of us about each other's experiences and culture and through this learning, we can foster a harmony that evolves into a mutual love and loyalty for both nation and heritage.
