If you’ve ever wondered what goes into bringing a project like this to life… here’s a glimpse behind the scenes from just the launch day from our side. 👀 Over the past few months, my team and I have been on the ground shooting, editing, and building towards the launch of “From Margins to Metrics”—a project by Haki Data Lab and Data 4 Change. It’s been one of those projects where every week looks completely different. From radio stations to dumpsites, printing presses to late-night edits—constantly asking “does this make sense?” and “are we ready?” Some moments that stood out: • Capturing data on the airwaves We were there as Stevo (HDL co-director) and Cricket (waste picker, data researcher, and poet) went live on GhettoRadio 89.5 FM—sharing insights, answering questions, and performing a data-driven poem built from 1,000+ surveys. • On the ground in Dandora Following along as partners met face-to-face at Dandora dumpsite—documenting the spaces where many of the data researchers actually work. • From spreadsheets to real-world visuals Filming and documenting the process of turning data into physical pieces—stickers, lesos, and reflector vests designed by Taqiya N.—work that carries insights back into the community. • Edit nights that turned into mornings 📹 Long but rewarding sessions in post with Sidney Kemboi and Victor Murithi, putting together PSA-style dataviz videos that will live inside matatus and across social media. • Building the digital home 📱 Capturing the rollout of the revamped Haki Data Lab website—bringing together the data, stories, and creative outputs in one place. • The final stretch And of course, the behind-the-scenes chaos—moving stacks of freshly printed policy briefs and preparing for a launch event with 100+ attendees from government, media, and the community. Moments like these are a reminder that projects like this don’t just happen—they’re built, piece by piece, by a lot of hands. Grateful to have documented this journey with Haki Data Lab and Data 4 Change. 🫶🏽
