Man I love having great friends like @vokeywedgerep to walk me thru some of the intricacies of sole grinds and how bounce is measured. I wish we recorded this FaceTime and released it as a podcast. The gearheads would have loved it!
I could write so much on everything he shared, but I’ll keep it as simple as possible. Bounce angle measurement is fairly simple when the sole doesn’t have any polish on it. However, with many lob wedges in today’s game, there have been alterations made to help a player with versatility. This, however, complicates how that Wedge’s bounce is measured.
Take a T grind for instance… it’s got a narrow front part of its sole. And there has been a lot of polish to the back edge, heel and toe. If you only measured the front part of the T grind, it would be about 15° of bounce. However, when you open the clubface to play different shots around the green, it plays like it has significantly less bounce.
In the final picture, AD is showing me how they measure the perpendicular height of the club. This measurement plays a role in the golf ball’s vertical strike on the clubface for full shots and pitch shots and can play an important role in bunker shots as well.
If you can do an outdoor wedge fitting, that is the best way you can find the right grind, sole and bounce for you and your style of delivering the club
