Nineteen years. It’s hard to write an anniversary message this many times without it feeling a little derivative. Many of you know the highlights. Niki and I started a wholesale company in LA over 20 years ago (okay, that part is starting to feel scary) that worked better than expected. It was just a fun thing we were doing in our early 20s before she got a real job and I got my life together.
Eventually we found our way back to Niki’s home state, opened our first shop in an alley, moved to High St., then into a big, beautiful two-story space. We went through the Great Recession, Short North construction, opened and moved Cub Shrub, then COVID and a few smaller bumps, before moving Tigertree to Clintonville, which just about brings us to the modern era.
When the Columbus shockwave that made our current space available hit, we knew we were about to take a make-or-break swing. After over 16 years as retail owners, we were burnt out. Running two tiny stores in different neighborhoods with two young kids was starting to feel unsustainable. It’s funny that a deeply personal decision (one that felt a little reckless) turned out to be the best business decision we’ve ever made.
Now, exactly three years into the big move and 19 years into the trip, I can’t imagine this store or community any other way. You’ve supported us through every move and change, and we can’t thank you enough for the trust you give us. We don’t take it lightly.
We also have to thank our incredible team, and Morgan in particular. Her leadership is a big part of why the store combination worked and continues to work. Every day, friends and customers tell me how much different and better this place feels because the people here genuinely care.
Lately creating a place full of joy, love, and hope can sometimes feel challenging, but it’s more important than ever. Thanks to everyone who spends time here in any capacity for helping make that possible.
Thanks to @meganleighbarnard for the photos!
Welp 2008 called to tell us about this awesome Prism Vision phone camera lens. We made these magical photos in one shot, no double exposure required!
They're here in the shop and online, but super-limited stock ✨
With recent shipments from Roark, Far Afield, Mollusk, and Toad & Co our men’s department is starting to look incredible for spring. I was going to try on a bunch of stuff but then we opened and people came in so I got through one outfit. But the new wide leg pant from Toad and Ripstop hoodie from Far Afield are both incredible.
Our Valentine’s Day table is looking cute. We have an entire wooden flower shop up there. We’re stocked up on jewelry, Baggu, Jellycat and Nee Doh and we’re ready to help!
Most of us will be snowed in for the next several days. Let us honor Alex and Renee, and support Liam and countless others, by using our voices relentlessly.
This can be a turning point if we choose to make it one.
Whether you have been against this from the beginning, or are only now realizing that something different is happening than what you supported, speak up. Call. Email. Text. Write letters. It matters
