Nine years ago, I started Soukra with an idea: to create a platform for Tunisian designers, showcasing their work through curated collections and connecting them with a wider audience.
Over time, that work has evolved, shaped through close collaboration with Tunisian designers and artisans, into a broader effort to situate Tunisia’s creative voices within a broader global dialogue.
Today, I’m incredibly proud to be part of Cabana Magazine Issue N25, which features two portfolios: one on modernism in Tunisia (words by me), and another on the arresting Ibadite mosques of Djerba (words by
@achrafbahrimeddeb ).
This project began as an idea two years ago. Last fall, it came to life through an intense October of preparation, followed by a week in November traveling across Tunisia with photographer
@oskar.proctor Proctor. From Djerba to Tunis, we moved through landscapes, architecture, and histories spanning over a millennium: 9th-century mosques, underground homes in Tataouine, and post-independence modernist buildings.
None of this would have been possible without the friendships and connections formed in Tunisia over the past twenty years. Thank you to
@anissaaida ,
@achrafbahrimeddeb ,
@senda_ben_jaafar , Tarek, Habib,
@ridhamoumni ,
@dar_dhiafa , and many others who made this possible.
And thank you to Cabana for the trust, and to Oskar for the depth and clarity of your lens. Seeing this work in print feels both monumental and deeply connected to that original idea.
Issue N25 of
@cabanamagazine is out now, with cover art created in collaboration with Roman High Jeweler Bvlgari.
